IBM Support Assistant Workbench 4.1 (ISA) - Tools - Visual Configuration Explorer - Update Site not available

  • 1.  IBM Support Assistant Workbench 4.1 (ISA) - Tools - Visual Configuration Explorer - Update Site not available

    Posted Thu August 24, 2023 10:32 AM

I have problems installing tools/add-ons inside ISA Workbench 4.1 tool. This is fresh installation of ISA Workbench 4.1 tool.
Tool/add-on that I want to install is VCE tool (Visual Configuration Explorer).
Any time when I go to Tools Catalog and try to add/install VCE, clicking on "Launch Update Wizard" link I get the error:
IBM Support Assistant was unable to connect to the Update Site(s). Please ensure that you have internet connectivity and/or that your site address is valid
AISUM0035W - The update site manager was unable to initialized a valid remote site at location "http://download.boulder.ibm.com/ibmdl/pub/software/isa/isa401/production/"

Is Update Site / repository url changed/removed?

I also tried to achieve my job installing ISA 5 Team Server tool but wasn't able to find VCE tool inside it.
This ISA 5 tool "IBM Web Server Plug-in Analyzer for WebSphere Application Server" seems to be replacement for ISA 4.1 VCE tool, but I'm not able to make it function like ISA 4.1 VCE tool.

ISA 4.1 VCE tool did the job perfectly for me in the past and if possible I would like to make that tool functional again. So if someone know what happened to update site (IBM repo), actually if someone know eventual new repo url, please let me know.

Hi, The last version of ISA was v5 and was supported as-is.  It is no longer available and not supported.  The links for ISA went away several years ago.

    Hi Brian,

    thank you for your reply.

I haven't worked in the field for about 4 years. I know that I successfully used ISA Workbench 4.1 in 2018/2019.

Is ISA 5 Team Server successor to ISA Workbench 4.1?

Is IBM Web Server Plug-in Analyzer for WebSphere Application Server in ISA 5 Team Server successor to Visual Configuration Explorer in ISA Workbench 4.1?

So what is the supported replacement for ISA 5 Team Server?

There is no replacement.  If you want to analyze some data then there are plugins for Eclipse.

    Hi Brian,

A few years ago I stumbled upon this:-
    https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/ibm-pattern-modeling-and-analysis-tool-java-garbage-collector-pmat

    and this
    https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/ibm-thread-and-monitor-dump-analyzer-java-tmda

although I guess the former might not actually supported any more either, and may not work with later JDKs? Is there any value in using ga458.jar (with disclaimer) for certain issues is it seemed to provide similiar output to ISA?

    Thanks

These tools are available as plugins to Eclipse and should be used instead of the old standalone tools.

    Thanks Brian,

I will also start using the Eclipse plugins as opposed to the old standalone tools

I installed Eclipse (choosed Eclipse IDE for Java Developers - the first link in Eclipse installer).

Went to Eclipse Marketplace and tried to find "VCE" tool. I used a lot of different key-word combinations, but found nothing that look liked as "VCE" tool.

Do you perhaps know the name of Eclipse plugin "replacing" VCE tool (Visual Configuration Explorer) in ISA Workbench 4.1?

I need a tool capable of comparing two WAS configurations and yielding the differences.

My case scenario in the past and now (on AIX OS where WAS 8.5.5 is installed):

    1. At the beginning of the month I make "collector.zip" file with isadc tool (IBM Support Assistant Data Collector tool).
    2. The next month (also at the beginning of the month) I make another one "collector.zip" file (also with isadc tool).
    3. In the past I used ISA Workbench 4.1 VCE tool to load those two collector.zip files and with "Compare..." button I used to get configuration differences in the last one month period.
    4. Now, without ISA Workbench 4.1 VCE tool or without similar tool I'm not able to "easily" detect the configuration changes. Without such a tool (in recent months) I "manually" review a bunch of configuration xml files to figure out if changes happened - it is time consuming and pretty inconvenient.

    Hi Damir,

    1. ISA 4.1 has been replaced with ISA 5; however, ISA5 is supported on an "as is" basis and is only planned to be updated about once per year.
    2. VCE is no longer available. There is no IBM tool that I'm aware of that provides a comprehensive configuration difference for WebSphere traditional. Here are other options we provide for WebSphere traditional:
      1. WebSphere Application Server Configuration Comparison Tool (non-comprehensive; supported "as is")
      2. WebSphere Application Server Configuration Visualizer using the -z option and use a text difference tool (non-comprehensive; supported "as is"; also available in ISA5)
      3. Run AdminTask.extractConfigProperties and then use a text file difference tool (this is part of the product and supported; non-comprehensive)
    3. Eclipse plugins in the Eclipse Marketplace such as IBM Garbage Collection and Memory Visualizer, IBM Java Health Center client, and the IBM DTFJ plugin for Memory Analyzer tool should be avoided as they are out-of-date (pending work to update them). Instead use standalone builds (or somewhat recent builds are in ISA5):
      1. GCMV: https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/garbage-collection-and-memory-visualizer

      2. MAT: https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/eclipse-memory-analyzer-tool-dtfj-and-ibm-extensions
      3. Health Center: https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/health-center-client

    Hi Kevin,

thank you for providing a lot of useful information.

I tried to do my job with ISA 5, but wasn't successful.

I will try your suggestions, especially regarding WAS Configuration Comparison Tool. It looks promising.

In meanwhile do you maybe have "offline installer" of ISA 4.1 tool?

By "offline installer" I mean installer file ISA 4.1 with Repository (all tools) included - no need for update/internet access to online IBM repo. I can see that ISA 5 has this type of installer on its download page, so I think maybe ISA 4.1 had the same.

If I could get ISA 4.1 with bundled tools I would get VCE inside it and that would solve my problem, at least for now.
