  • 1.  IBM Cognos- and PAW/TM1 integration

    Posted Tue March 15, 2022 08:15 AM
    Hi all!

We are currently on the latest versions of Cognos and PAW on-prem.
I am searching for information on how to better integrate the Cognos and PAW environments. I am therefore asking the experts here for information or comments on the following questions.

What is the roadmap for the integration of Cognos and PAW?
Can I view PAW books directly in the Cognos environment?
How can I read TM1 cubes directly in Cognos?
Should I exchange data between the two using text files?
What is the best practice when using Cognos and PAW?

    Users and licensing
Should I train the users to view the data in Cognos rather than PAW?
Is there a common user license available for Cognos and PAW?

    Thanks in advance, Asgeir.

Can I view PAW books directly in the Cognos environment?
Yes... Cognos allows you to embed web pages, so you could present PAW books within Cognos. Using PAW Url API you could also control what is shown

How can I read TM1 cubes directly in Cognos?
Cognos contains a Planning Analytics data connector. You can either access the cube through data modules or a framework package

Should I exchange data between the two using text files?
No need, there is a connector. There is a high learning curve though to working with OLAP data sources such as TM1 within Cognos Analytics.

Should I train the users to view the data in Cognos rather than PAW?
Personal view, if I want the users to do dashboarding themselves on TM1 data, I would use PAW. If I want the users to do dashboarding on relational data such as SQL I would use Cognos. I you wanted to use stylish report which the users would only interact with, i.e. not change the design of, then you can use report studio. This can work well to give a high quality report but it requires a high learning curve to ensure the correct data is retrieved and the performance of the queries/report is optimal.

Is there a common user license available for Cognos and PAW?
I'm not a licencing guru, but have a look at the Express licencing, hopefully someone else will be able to assist on this

Thank you @Simon Saul, this is very helpful.
Perhaps someone knows of guidance material, videos, etc. on how to set up and use the connector.
I am also hoping for comments on the licensing options for shared licensing.

    This is the first step:
Configure datasource to IBM Planning Analytics 2.0.x in IBM Cognos Analytics 11.0.6+

Once you have this data source, you can either:
    A) Create a package using framework manager containing a selection of cubes (Each cube is imported individually)
    B) Create a data module in Cognos Analytics using the datasource

Struggling to find documentation for this quickly.
Note: When using the package, any meta data changes, such as structural to dimensions you'll need to run the TI command RefreshMDXHierarchy for the changes to be reflected in Cognos Analytics
