How to weight a sample to become representative of population?

  • 1.  How to weight a sample to become representative of population?

I am a graduate student working with a public data file called National Hospital and Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NHAMCS). I have a question about a certain function in SPSS .

What I am trying to accomplish is summarized in the excerpt below:

"In total, 70,352 Patient Record Forms in the dataset (40,145 in NAMCS and 30,207 in NHAMCS-OPD) were included in our analysis, representing 1.68 billion encounters... after appropriate weighting."

I myself have been able to extract 1,215 encounters associated with diabetes type II from my data set and need to weigh it so that this sample becomes representative of the nation as above. However, I do not know how to do this in SPSS. If you would kindly direct me to the appropriate function, I would greatly appreciate it!

Install the SPSSINC RAKE extension command via Extensions > Extension Hub. It will appear on the Data menu. Using it, you can construct weights to match population control totals in up to ten dimensions.
