    Hi,

I would like to know how many steps IBM will take to upgrade z/OS from R2.3 to R2.4 on mainframe?

    Thank you very much.

    Hi Jianfu Wang,
z/OS upgrade is not counting the steps, but knowing the concept of z/OS and to carry out each procedure/ configuration needed.
The basic upgrade of operating system is simple. But every site and installation has their own setup and configuration which is unique.
We need to customize the upgraded z/OS to each site's environment setup which take time.

    Regards,
    YF Ooi.

    Good morning YEE FONG:

Thank you very much for your information.

I tried to ask IBM zTech this question since 02/09/2022. I cannot get answer from IBM. So I turn to Group and see who could know that or have the experience. Because IBM suggested two options to upgrade z/OS from R2.3 to R2.4 or R2.5 (as the below). We need to make sense how many days the system will be outage or how much cost.

Here are the IBM suggested options for z/OS upgrade.

    1. System Replacement: This option includes the provisioning of a new system and a no-charge period of up to 90 days. Once the new system is established the ISV would move their data to the new system. In this scenario ISVs would have 2 active systems but will only be charged for the older system. At the end of the no-charge period the old system will be decommissioned. System programming, RACF and middleware skills are required. In the event of changes to either system resulting in unsurmountable problems (ex. misconfigurations or removal of systems services, subsystems or datasets), the Dallas ISV Center team can assist by assessing the situation to determine the best approach. If Dallas ISV Center technical skills are required to perform changes and repairs to the system, the technical consultant fee will be is $200 USD, per technical consultant, per hour.
    2. System Migration: An ISV selects this option if they want the IBM Dallas ISV Center team to migrate their system from the current release to the latest release. The migration is performed in steps in which the system is migrated up one release level at a time. Each "migration step" takes 1 complete day to perform during which time the system will be unavailable for use. The fee for each migration step is $1,000 USD.

    Thank you very much.

I have been a systems programmer for 40+ years. As one mentioned, knowing the concepts are more important than counting steps. For instance, if you install with a server pack the concept of using the ISPF menu and drivers are important. If you are running a zPDT, then you have ADCD downloads that must be customized. Then each shop may have its own naming standards for datasets, so names will need to be adjusted. There are catalog, parmlib, proclib and other entries that must be dealt with. If you run in an SYSPLEX with multiple LPARs then you need to ensure each LPAR has toleration PTFs applied so you can fall back from one release to another prior to an upgrade. Then there are the vendor products. Prior to any upgrades, you would need to check with your vendors to ensure they are compatible with the release of z/OS being installed. In some cases, vendor products may need to be upgraded first. Also, some z/OS upgrades require changes that are listed in the product directory or HOLD ACTION data in the PTFs. Exits, if there are any, may need to be reinstalled with current macros.

So as you can see there are many variables one must take into account. I always start out with a basic plan of what I need to do, but as I work on the upgrade that plan expands to include new items I found that need to be performed.
