Right now I am having an issue with an exp400 array attached to an IntelliStation POWER5 with AIX 5.3. Single SCSI connection, 6 disks in the array. I can see 5 extra disks, but not 6, and I had had the impression that the array would present as one disk (I got that idea from a Windows guy though...)

So is presenting individual disks expected? If so, why would 6 not show instead of 5?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

"lsdev -Cc disk" lists hdisk 0-6, the first two are the onboard scsi disks. 2-6 are "other SCSI disk drive" and are all 06-08-* instead of 04-08-*. I get the same result in smitty when I select "list all physical volumes in system"

    What else to check?

04-08-* and 06-08-* are two different scsi adapters so you have two SCSI connections.

If you have disks 0-6 then you have 7 disks!

    How about you post:
    lsdev -Cc adapter
    lsdev -Cc disk
    lsdev -Cs scsi

Then we'll have a go at letting you know what you have.

First, I finally realized that the exp400 is, in fact, JBoD. Being sure of that helped clear up some things.

I also realized it was skipping a number in the scsi id assignment, but when I swapped that disk with the last one to verify and then used rmdev and cfgmgr, all the disks showed up.

There were still no PVs, so I tried creating them manually, and got an error that led me to try format and certify from diag. That failed, saying that I should run diagnostics. That failed on the hard drives with a bus error, but tests on the SCSI adapter and enclosure where fine, and after that, the disks passed. Not too sure about that, but whatever. I am now certifying the disks, I hope after this things will start working as they should.

I don't think I have had this much fun since I first tried to get Mandrake Linux working back about 1999.
