  • 1.  DOORS vs. DNG

Excuse me for my newness, but I'd like to hear from some DOORS and DNG users instead of searching around online! What are the big differences between DOORS and DOORS next gen? Why would I choose one over the other?

    Hi David,

Here's a list (may not be comprehensive) that highlights main differences between DNG and Classic DOORS:

    • Web interface for users and administration (vs client server and DWA)
    • Based on commercial database and application server (vs proprietary database)
    • Artifact types with specific attributes (vs plain objects) defined at project level (vs module level)
    • Artifacts are not property of a module, can be included/reused in different modules (vs an object belongs to a module)
    • Artifact templates
    • Project templates (vs copy folder with modules)
    • Lock artifact when editing it (vs shareable edit mode)
    • Global configuration management (vs baselines/baseline sets)
    • Cross-module, cross-project reporting using dashboards and JRS
    • Notifications using dashboards
    • Suspect links profiles
    • Available in SaaS (the complete CLM Solution)

DNG has now the main IBM innovation focus. Classic DOORS will continue to be maintained and supported for a long time.

If I was starting a new project or requirements initiative, my choice would be DNG. If you have legacy requirements and/or big DXL code base, the decision is not so straightforward. In that case, you have to take into acccount a few topics such as training, data and code migration, infrastructure...

    Kind regards

    Oskar

Here's a recording of a webinar I did a few years back that highlights some of the major differences between the tools:

Oscar does a good job of summarizing the differences, if I didn't have 14+ years of DXL writing under my belt I too would say DNG is a better bet for a new project. Certainly if you are working a product line I would give strong consideration to DNG over classic DOORS regardless of how much DXL customizations you have.

Regardless of which route you go you will need to ensure you have a good architecture to match your process, for DOORS 9.x I would recommend having at least one DOORS Administrator who can also develop code (i.e. DXL) for the DNG route you will need to have the right infrastructure in place as it's considertably more involved to stand up the Jazz server infrastrucutre than it is to install the DOORS 9.x server/client.

Thank you Oskar and Alex. I'll take a look through the resources you provided. Sometimes it's much eaiser to learn from a user perspective and your responses seem very thoughtful and thorough.
