  • 1.  Does WAS ND support nodes of different operating systems?

We have a WebSphere ND 8.5.5 cluster with five nodes, all AIX.

Is it possible to add a new Windows node to the cluster and is such configuration supported by IBM?

Yes, you can add Windows nodes to the cluster. You can add 'distributed' nodes (aix, linux, windows) to the same cluster. But you cannot mix distributed and z/OS servers in one cluster.
Be aware of the path differences although, so if you plan to use datasources or shared libraries, make sure you are utilizing node scoped WebSphere Variables to define paths.

    Thanks Gas!
I was under the impression that I read once that  IBM required same OS and same WAS version-patch level for cluster members.
But perhaps it was for another product.

Yes, heterogeneous O/S's in a cell are supported, but be aware that this introduces operational differences for the administration team and as a result, it's best to employ homogeneous O/S's in any distributed environment so that the operational differences don't lead to administrative errors which result in the need to contact support

    Thank you Tom!
Can you clarify the "operational differences" that may occur? Do you mean the OS administration differences or WAS behavior-limitations between OSs?

The OS administration differences, which in turn may require WAS administration differences , e.g. file system paths.
