    I think it is rather a case of Micro Focus COBOL supporting AIX as an operating system, because IBM would not support a third party application.

    A quick google for:

    Micro Focus COBOL AIX

    suggests you can indeed run, even a 64bit version of, Micro Focus COBOL on AIX version 5.

    You should check with Microfocus to make sure your exact setup would be compatible. I know we are running MF COBOL on AIX 5.3 64bit without any problems.
