We are retiring some hardware so I got to delete content on the harddrives - though it is not so critical for us.

I used install DVD, booted it and in maintenance section opted for 'erase'. Then I selected all hardrives and let it run.

Almost immediately it showed aproximate task completion 100%, elapsed time 1 min, and text "erasing drives". And no change afterwards.

After one day I forced shutdown of the LPAR and boot DVD again, and it reported (again in 'erase' section) that all disks still had rootvg on them.

Obviously erasing crashed in some early stage.

Do you have any experiences with it?

Or should I used dd command to rewrite disk with zeros? I hope install DVD will allow me to do it...

    Thanks

I have accomplished this in the past using the diagnostics media it even allows you to write patterns to the disk, if you don't have it you can download from http://www14.software.ibm.com/webapp/set2/sas/f/diags/home.html

    Hope this helps.

I found out that we already had such CD. In spite of the fact that I selected the CD drive as a boot device two times I booted into installed system before I read a guide and found out that I am supposed to hit "5" within a very short period during boot or CD will end booting and boot the installed system instead... :(

And then I fund that it is not possible to have it format/erase all drives at once (the machine has 6 harddrives)

Definitely it could be more user-friendly, but it works...

    Thanks
