That is, they're unable to ping their default gateway after I give the port an address to activate it. We originally noticed this because of an issue with SEA failover, but quickly demonstrated that it occurred for all interfaces.

I've ruled out spanning tree (portfast is configured on the switch ports, and a Windows laptop will be able to ping the default gateway in 3-7 seconds.

So either I'm running into a bug, or I need to change the switch config or the default AIX/VIO Ethernet settings. The VIO server version is 1.5.2.1, with the latest four interim fixes applied. The AIX version is 5.3 TL 6.

The switch is a Cisco 6509 (layer 3 switch). I don't have as many details as I'd like because of the customer's security policies. Also, we can't run a packet sniffer because all the SPAN ports are in use (and I haven't gotten much out of tcpdump from the AIX/VIO end).

One thought I did have is that this may be related to an ARP issue. However, this doesn't explain to me why the Windows laptop started up so quickly (I would imagine it would have the same issue).

Any thought you have would be greatly appreciated.

You have checked the media speed and duplex, sometimes if the speed is wrong you get a pause in ports coming up as packets go missing.
