Concern about losing files when transfering to a new university/SPSS license

  • 1.  Concern about losing files when transfering to a new university/SPSS license

Hello, I am trying to activate a new SPSS license with my university and I have a question. I completed a large data analysis project using SPSS at another institution and I am working on some extra data analysis using that data. I have since graduated and moved to a new university and I'm hoping to continue the data analysis using a license at my new institution, as I no longer have access through my old institution. My new university tech support told me that I need to delete and re-download SPSS from their university website for the authentication process to work with the license they gave me, but I am afraid of deleting all my data, syntax, and output files that I used at my previous institution when I delete SPSS. Does anyone know if I delete and redownload SPSS (version 29), if (a) the .sav, .sps, and .spv files wil stay on my computer, and (b) if those files will be usable with the new license under my new university?

    Thanks!

Uninstalling - not deleting - SPSS will not affect your data, syntax, or output files, and they will be usable on a new install, but I would make a copy of these files in some different location or on a different device just to be sure that you have a secure copy as a backup in case something fails on your system or you inadvertently delete something.  You might need to reapply any preference settings you have changed. If you have modified any of the tableLooks or ChartLooks that come with SPSS, you might want to save your copies of those, too.

I am surprised that the university thinks you need to remove the current system in order to update it to work with their license.  Normally one would just apply the new license via the License Manager using a new code, but perhaps they have something special set up.

If you do a new install, you might want to be sure to install the fixpack for V29 from the IBM Fix Central site to get the updates for V29.  It's also possible, of course, that the new U's license doesn't cover some of the procedures that you had access to on the old system.  Or it might have additional procedures.  And while installing SPSS automatically includes some extension commands, if you have installed others and the new configuration is different, you might have to install those via Extensions > Extension Hub.
