  • 1.  Cognos Series 7 migration tools?

    Posted 3 days ago

Hi everyone, I'm looking for some advice. We have a customer on Series 7 Impromptu who needs to move to C11 or C12.

I remember doing a big project about 13 years ago where we moved a customer from C7 to C10 and there was a suite of migration tools available that converted the catalog into a framework manager model, and converted the impromptu reports into report studio reports. However I can't find any reference to these tools anywhere. Have they been retired? If not, does anyone have any links to documentation / download?

    Many thanks in advance!

    Hi John,

From what I can see in Cognos 11, it's still possible to import certain objects related to Impromptu - I haven't done that in a long time, so I'm not sure how it works in this version.

Additionally, I found in my archive the probable names of the tools (for Cognos 8.1.2 MR2) that were included in the installation packages:

    • Architect Model Migration Tool 8.1.2 MR2 Windows   (3,344,314 bytes)   arch2fm_win32_8.1.209.11_ml.tar.gz
    • Cognos BI Series 7 Migration and Upgrade Tools 8.1.2 MR2 Windows   (12,288,117 bytes)   migs7_win32_8.1.209.11_ml.tar.gz

Unfortunately, I currently have no physical way to check further (until Monday).

I hope this at least helps a little…

    Hi John,

The tricky part is to retrieve the software (from Cognos Impromptu v7.5, not supported since April 2023) that will convert your catalog file to an XML file. I believe it was called impcat2xml or a similar name.

I'm not sure if IBM can provide this impcat2xml program.

    Best regards,
