Cannot see internal disk in S1024

  • 1.  Cannot see internal disk in S1024

    Posted Fri October 11, 2024 03:49 PM

First of all, I apologize because I am a bit rusty. I have an S1024 server in demo, and I am unable to see the two front NVMe drives. The server has the latest firmware level (1060) and is connected to the HMC, which also has the latest code level (1060). The drives are EC7T and are managed by the "NVMe JBOF card" located in slot P0-C10. If I create a VIO server or an LPAR and assign all system resources to it, there is no way to assign the card that manages the drives. How can I assign the drives to a partition?

    Hello Stefano,

If i understand your question correctly you are looking for assigning for the "NVMe JBOF card " to the partition so that the two disk drives are visible to the partition. After creating the partition you can go to Physical I/O adapters -> Add adapter, select P0-C10 card from the available list to see the C10 card there.  I believe EC7T is 800 GB Mainstream NVMe U.2 SSD 4k which only support Linux/AIX.

Please refer to the sample screenshot below.

Hi thanks Rohit for your help. Problem that when I go to Physical I/O adapters -> Add adapter, I cannot select P0-C10 card because it is not in the list. I can see only as resource from System resources > Processor, Memory, I/O, but I cannot find a way to assign. I have also created an LPAR flagged to take all the system's resources, and then I used standalone diagnostic to see all the available resources. Well, I cannot find any configured NVMe device.

    Hi Stefano,

Do you have other partitions on this server, if yes may be this card is already assigned there.

Can you please go the partiton profile : check the I/O and virtual adapters tab there. What is the status ?  Can you please share the screenshot?

System has just arrived and we are starting the implementation. There are no other partitions. We wanted to start the first installation of the first LPAR and we cannot find the way to assign P0-C10 and disks to first partition.

From the system's resources, adapter is present

No P0-C10 although the LPAR has all resources' flag

    Nothing to add

    Hi,

When you created the partition have you selected Restricted I/O partition? Is it Linux or AIX ? Can you please share the screenshot for the Physical I/O of the server and the partition profile. It might lead us to the problem.

    Regards

    Rohit

    Hi

What patch level is your HMC?
There is a known issue in 10R3 where it doesn't recognize hardware properly.
Have you done a discovery power on.
Can you see your hardware in the asmi?

    Hi Paul,

HMC Version is V10 R3 SP1060 / MF71689. I have done "discovery power on" several times. I can see the P0-C10 card in ASMI and I can see the associated four connection to backplane. I cannot see disks in ASMI (Is it normal?). However, from HMC, I can see the card in P0-C10 when I go to Systems>Processor, Memory, I/O, but I cannot assign to any partition I create (VIO or LPAR) but I cannot see even if LPAR has  "all system resources".

    Hi

You might want to try MF71704 patch for that version.

    Hi Stefan,

You need to Power off your server and start your server with Hardware discovery on. Please try and let me know.

Hi, I tried, but I did it once again. After Discovery mode, things are not changing. I can see the adapter in the system resources, but I cannot assign this P0-C10 slot to any LPAR, even if I flag to have all resources, it is not assigned.

    Hi Stefano,

That's good then - hardware discovery part is already taken care of.

In your screenshot for different cards there is no owner yet. It should show your AIX LPAR name if the resources are correctly assigned. I would suggest to create a new LPAR and don't assign all resources to it. Once LPAR is created then go to Physical I/O adapter and try to add it what is needed.

Uhm, something strange. After I created the previous LPAR to take all resources, actually I have never turned on it yet. Now that I created the new LPAR (in addition) to try with your suggestion, let me explain what I see. I have created it only selecting CPU and memory, and after its creation I go to selected physical I/O. Well, there is nothing to select, no adapter at all.

Then I deleted the LPAR with all resources flag (never turned on), and I can see physical I/O to add to the new LPAR, but still no P0-C10.

This is because all the resources are still allocated to the first LPAR. Can you please delete all and create the new LPAR without allocating all the resources.

Then all the adapters should be available in Physical I/O.

Hi, if the LPAR with all resources has never been turned on, and anyway it was turned off, resources should be available to any other LPAR. I think this is a defect. Anyway, after I deleted the LPAR with all resources, I can see Physical I/O to assign, but never the P0-C10 adapter

    Hi Stefan,

Once you assign all the resources to any LPAR irrespective of the partition status it is blocked for other partitions use as it is no more available for allocation and marked as assigned. As we are at the point now where you can see all the Physical I/O adapters except the P0-C10 card i would say this is an issue now. We normally use SAN in our environment so the setup is little bit different.

I also noticed that Paul also recommended to update the HMC version . I would say yes to it as i see some issues related to Physical I/O are also fixed. Suggest you to update it to latest and try again .

    Thanks Paul , appreciate that.
