  • 1.  BRMS TAPMLB* device question

    Posted 30 days ago

BRMS has two different backup schemes with two different Control Groups. Does each control group require it's own TAPMLB* device and does each TAPMLB* device want it's own TAP0* device to use?

Is that a requirement or is there specific configuration that can make one TAPMLB* device work with one TAP0* device across both schemes and control groups?

    Hi Daniel,

BRMS can use same TAPMLB* library for two different control groups. Assuming you have two drives allocated under TAPMLB* at least in order to process these two control groups simultaneously if that is the ultimate goal.

When TAPMLB* is defined in the control group BRMS will automatically allocate the available TAP* drive under this library for the backup.

I normally just specify the media library in the control group.  Yes, the same media library can be in multiple control groups.  Our media library is a VTL with multiple drives defined.  When it's 'at rest' it normally looks like this:

    WRKMLBSTS

    Device/
      Resource     Status                 Allocation
    USSI7VTL       VARIED ON
      TAP01        OPERATIONAL            UNPROTECTED
      TAP05        OPERATIONAL            UNPROTECTED
      TAP06        OPERATIONAL            UNPROTECTED
      TAP08        OPERATIONAL            UNPROTECTED
      TAP09        OPERATIONAL            UNPROTECTED
      TAP10        OPERATIONAL            UNPROTECTED
      TAP11        OPERATIONAL            UNPROTECTED
      TAP12        OPERATIONAL            UNPROTECTED

When in use it will change the allocation of one or more drives as needed by the backup.  Many of our backups are set up in BRMS to stream out to multiple drives simultaneously.  Something I wouldn't dream of doing without BRMS.  I've done bare metal boot from tape restores from these backups so I trust them completely and they are not all that complicated, if you're using BRMS for the restore.

Thank you for the quick reply, I am new to the IBM world, working on the AS400 7.3 and just started with BRMS, your help is much appreciated.

    Could not agree more Rob.

My systems work exactly like you described except we don't have a VTL. We use

a tape library with multiple drives.
