Hi Mark,
BPM 8.6 applications are supported by IBM BAW but migrations are always tricky. You need to consider many things before planning migration and it won't be easy to answer your question in few lines. Through analysis, estimation and planning are required before migration. Migration planning and approach will vary greatly if you are upgrading the existing system, migrating to an on-prem BAW environment or migrating to BAW on Cloud.
Our company is helping multiple customers with similar needs. That does not mean you cannot do it yourself - you need to analyze the applications thoroughly for deprecated artifacts, compatibility of existing data on new environment, reporting(performance data warehouse) compatibility etc. and plan the migration accordingly.
Thanks!

Subject: BPM to BAW migration
My team inherited an application developed in BPM and we have been slowly learning our way around BPM and now the environment is being upgraded to BAW. We are only responsible for the developed application, not the BAW product or environment. Any advice about the best way to start this process? Would BAW training be a good place to start? Will the BPM 8.6 application work in BAW?
