This is what I have found on this question:
According to https://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/sg248355.html
"Local ... folders are stored in the BPM managed store (in the BPM database). External ECM document and folder references are also stored in the BPM managed store"
So the Managed Store is in the BPM database, containing a) local folders and b) references to external docs/folders, when the BAW is chosen here
https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/baw/23.x?topic=cp-selecting-business-automation-workflow-external-ecm-system-manage-folders
Managed Store should not be used for documents, which used to be possible but is deprecated.
In BAW , managed store overall is deprecated https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/baw/23.x?topic=interactions-outbound-operations

Subject: BPM Document vs. Managed store
Hi Folks,
Could anybody explain please, what is the difference between the BPM Document Store and BPM Managed Store? We can select they in a Content Integration Task implementation (Server property), but what if we select this or that?
Thanks,
