Considering that some automated actions have to be performed when an audit event occurs which is the best approach to use.

Use Audit events or have a Insert Notification on Audit DB and use data through it.

You can subscribe directly to audit events in your code via the pub.events services. Much cleaner and doesn't require you mess around with external resources.
