Anyone upgrade their x86 based vHMC to V11 yet?

  • 1.  Anyone upgrade their x86 based vHMC to V11 yet?

    How's the stability?

According to FLRT V11 required for Power 11.  I just want to get ready.

Yes, me - just yesterday :-)

Direct upgrade from v1062 with latest PTF (GUI "HMC Upgrade" from IBM website) was straightforward.

The very first login attempt complained about some strange errors but no more problems since then.

Warning - it really does not control any Power8 servers.

Works fine with Power9, no P10&11 in my lab yet...

    Regard Igor.

That would be like, what, 24 hours?  Sounds like a good enough test for me.  I'll get right on that upgrade.

Haven't had any Power 8's in years.  I'd dump that Power 9 if IBM had a Power 11 in the IBM i P05 tier.

A HMC release supports N-2 generations of Power as it's lowest generation (down to).  R11-2=Power9, R10-2=Power8, R9-2=Power7......

    @Phill Rowbottom,

Makes perfect sense.  Seems to fit right in with how IBM does things.

It's been this way for quite a while.  At least since V7.

V5 HMC which came out with Power5 couldn't manage Power4 or though.  The connectivity from the HMC to the FSP changed from serial to Ethernet with Power5.  Power5 was also the start of PHYP as we now know it.  Power4 wasn't as functional - no VIO, no shared etc, just dedicated CPU, Memory and I/O.

Changing from serial to ethernet was awesome.  Also moving off of WebSM - good times.

Serial? POWER4. Back when the term 'Logical Partition' made sense. They should have renamed it to 'Virtual Machines' when micro-partitioning was introduced on POWER5.

Right?  When "full" virtualization happened , we went from LPARs to VMs but the terms were used SOOOOOO interchangably .  Similar to then p-series / i-series became POWER in 2008 and now getting close to 20 years later, I still hear p-series more often than one might think.

Using it for a week now, so far all looks good.
    Managing power9 with it.

No issues so far , been a couple weeks.  The new code was great , really hoping that they back port some of the cool stuff like "autonomous error resolution" which gets all your snaps and pedbg etc.etc. and pushes them up over your call home connection to generate /update a ticket.  It was great to use with Power11 servers , but this is something ALL Power servers should be able to take advantage of.

Upgraded both my vHMC's to V11 yesterday.  So far, so good.  Wasn't even a rewrite of the UX either.

Also - one item worth noting :
POWERVC users - Check the compatibility of the your version of PowerVC to HMC code.  You may need to come up to 2.3.1 for PowerVC to recognize that HMC V11 code.
