It did not rewind or continue, just stayed at where the power stopped. My log record showed a message of the backup for "tar: /dev/rmt0.1: The device is not ready for operation". Only after I rewind and reload the tape several times, the tape finally moved. The tape is HP DAT 72 SCSI 4 mm. It definitely did not run out of tape and is a new tape.

I am not surprised the tape drive was confused about its state.
it would power up and not understand that there is a tape loaded and have no idea where along the tape it is.

I assume you mean you are running a backup once a day rather than an 8 day single backup!

My question is - If there was a tape in the tape drive, so when the server was power on again, why could not it continue the cron job? What do you mean "it .. not understand that there is a tape loaded"? why the "tape drive was confused about its state" ?
