  • 1.  AIX lab for opensource developers?

    Posted Wed September 24, 2025 02:58 AM

    Hello,

there are many projects supported by OSS community which claim to support AIX but they do it only in a limited fashion. Often the reason is a lack of access of developers/maintainers to any AIX machine. This may lead to piling of AIX-related issues in bug tracker which are just waiting there with no real progress.

I am unaware of any free AIX hosting, but I do know that temporary labs are an option for training purposes. Is there a process how to request a temporary access to a lab in order for investigate an issue in the code?

    Thanks,

    jose

    Hi Jozef,

I am unaware of any free AIX hosting, too, even if I talked to several companies that were ready to work on such a project.

You can try https://community.ibm.com/community/user/blogs/mick-tarsel/2025/06/23/github-actions-power-z if it helps you, and ask @Gerrit Huizenga if they expect to have AIX support for the builds one day.

If you are an ISV or BP, you can get short-lived AIX LPARs through TechZone - techzone.ibm.com

While it does not offer free access, the IBM Cloud PowerVS service gives you access to a few dollars (around 3 to 4 dollars) a day for a very small copy of AIX in a virtual machine.

See my YouTube video playlist for a quick introduction and full hands-on details of the setup and access.

As it has pre-setup access to the AIX open source Toolbox, the GNU compilers and Python etc., are a quick install away.

I hope this helps some projects.

I think you have a typo, shouldn't it be "IBM Cloud PowerVS"??

I'm sure that I've watched quite a few of your wonderful videos on the topic.

    Phil,

You are absolutely correct I meant PowerVS = Power Virtual Server.

For anyone now confused by this thread, I was able to edit my entry PowerSC -> PowerVS.

ps: Thanks Phil for the correction and feedback.

@Andrey I recall you had nice presentation about PowerVS and terraform usage for quick deployment. Might be good alternative to free lab for OSS develompent.

PowerVS is really great, no matter if you look for long-term environment or just ad hoc basis.

@Jakub, do you mean this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wDg92qWgGAQ

I presented it at IBM vTechU 2020.

    2020? Time really flies :)

Don't recall right now if this was video or presentation but id does not matter - this is want I was talking about.  Imho it was and still is great example of quick deployment to lower costs.
