    Look at the documentation for alt_disk_install.
    What we do is break the root mirror, clone rootvg, update the clone to 5.3, then reboot to the upgraded disk the next night. After the reboot you may have other products you need to update but you are on your own for those.

    I think a B50 can support any AIX 5.3 level as long as it has the proper
    firmware. Going to 6.1 requires 64-bit hardware so all the older hardware
    will be stuck at 5.3 forever.
