  • 1.  Adding new table metadata to an existing data source

    Posted Mon January 20, 2020 02:56 PM
We are using V11.1.3 and Oracle DB.  When we need to add additional tables from our DW to a data connection in Cognos we have found that the update process seems to hang.  What happens is that the screen shows the update process starting, circular icon running, but it doesn't finish. It sits this way for over an hour but doesn't finish.  The uses closes down and tries to log in but they find they been locked out. The system has locked out everyone.  In fact the two times its happen we have needed to restart the IBM service.  Once restarted we check the data connection and find that the new tables did get added but I don't know why it locked up the system or why it took so long.
We want to to test this issue on our DEV system and wondered if anyone can recommend a way to watch the process or log it so we can see where the problem is happening.  Considering the fact we are just adding a new table metadata to the connection it shouldn't be a long process.  Any suggestions or ideas on how we can monitor this process would be greatly appreciated.

Never had this type of problem with Framework Manager packages so modules in V11 are new to us.  Thanks again for any expertise you can share.

    Scott,

The process of adding new tables to a data server is known to cause all sorts of issues. I would go in to the properties of connection and look at the load options. Turn everything off and see if that addresses the problem, it sometimes does.

By default, the "Load metadata" action will retrieve a statistical sample of 1000 from every table.  From this sample, the system infers data characteristics that are required for the artificial intelligence (AI) based functionality in the product, such as visualization recommendations or intelligently set default values on column properties. For example, to display the relationships diagram in Explore, an enriched package must be used. Otherwise, the relationships diagram isn't displayed.

I encourage you to submit an IBM Support case so we can investigate this issue with you.

If you need immediate resolution of the issue, you can exclude certain tables or reduce/turnoff the sampling as per
    https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSEP7J_11.1.0/com.ibm.swg.ba.cognos.ag_manage.doc/t_mldg_preload_metadata.html

In the Load options you will see a check box Retrieve sample data -> select this check box to retrieve sample data and specify the number of rows to retrieve by your data sample. Too many rows might impact the system performance; too few rows might not gather enough information. Clearing this check box reduces the time and memory usage by the system, but the expected information is not gathered.

Greetings, Scott! My what a small world this Cognos BI space is...

I've encountered much the same (long delay), but am working with a much smaller DB so less severe than you are experiencing.
Maybe you could use a "dummy" database instance that has very few records in the tables?
Good luck in tracking this down.
    All the best.

I forgot about the sample data read and the AI functionality.  We'll probably just turn off the sampling for now, since it seems to cause issues.  I'll evaluate setting up a SR with IBM for now.
thanks to everyone for sharing your expertise!
