A possible IBM Z opportunity....

  • 1.  A possible IBM Z opportunity....

    Posted Fri February 10, 2023 10:18 AM

I just read an article on the BBC about how all of the large data centers (or as the Brits say "data centre") being built in Ireland are putting a large strain on the local power grid. These centers are being built by Microsoft and Amazon, among others, and the government estimates that they could consume as much as 27% of the total electrical output of Ireland by 2029. I strongly suspect that these centers are full of x86 servers, all running at about 40% of capacity.

This is forcing the Irish government to take  action to make the data centers much more sustainable. I think it would be a really good idea if IBM would engage with the Irish government to show them out much energy could be saved by using the IBM Z  and LinuxONE instead of the x86 based platforms, but I don't have a clue as to who in IBM to make this suggestion to. Hopefully some Champion here might be able to take the ball here and run with it.....

    Many thanks.

Many thanks to all who have contacted me in support of this idea; much appreciated.

To continue this thread, here is another opportunity in the Linux on z space that I think IBM might be overlooking.  As a contractor/consultant I have seen a number of cases where IBM Sales was able to get a new z box into an other-wise x86 shop with the promise the "the z box is just a big server and, of course, Linux is Linux, even on a mainframe... ". Of course, both of these statements are true, but they don't tell the whole story, I think.  The Linux folks then just treat the z box exactly the same way they treat their x86 servers, sometimes freaking out when the CPU utilization hits over 60%. :-). Worst, they treat the z/VM hypervisor the same as they treat VMWare.

What I would really like to see done by somebody is to build a complete LinuxONE demo environment, running Linux on z, that exploits all of the features that that running Linux on z offers, like the ability to add and remove (dynamically) vCPUs, having file systems in shared DCSS, etc.

I am now off of my soapbox.

A great idea in principle; but there would be a lot of work first to be done in first in raising the profile of  Z in IBM Ireland itself.

My own experiences there would suggest that the IBM leadership teams both in Ireland and in the US have very little real energy, funds or interest in promoting Z even in IBM Ireland, let alone engaging with our government. Pity.

    Hi, Gary.

Thanks for the input. A bit depressing I think, but if the folks that actually make these things aren't interested in actually selling them there is not much we outsiders can do.

    Take care.

    Thank you very much, Shari.

I would very much like to be a part of this effort in some manner, if it does come to anything.

    Take care.

while Shari discusses it within IBM. Do you think in the direction of this video or something different?

    Hi, Stefan.

It is certainly a nice looking video, but it's still just a demo. As Scott said earlier, we need to be more aggressive here and take the fight to the enemy so to speak.

And as a person likes to get "down in the weeds" with technological stuff like, this, I would like to see more of the technical details of how the demo was actually made.....e.g., was there any virtualization done, and if so, by z/VM or KVM; how much storage was used and of what kind, SAN or ECKD, etc.

Many thanks for the links too.

    Take care.

Don't most IBM demo centers already have something set-up like this already anyway? I remember seeing similar set-ups in the BB center some years ago. I also recall building numerous LinuxONE systems with various applications for testing, PoC and so on so I think that IBM are actively doing this, we just don't see it. There is also plenty of good information starting at this point: https://www.ibm.com/z/linux

There are many available Demo's not sure if there is something like - managing the hardware and adding removing CPU's on a demo.
Most of the demo environments I have seen are based on the software and application running on top.

There is a significant focus on sustainability in recent zSystems announcements for z16 and LinuxONE Emperor 4. You will find more information here https://www.ibm.com/products/linuxone-emperor-4 as well as a link to the TCO and CO2e calculator for LinuxONE on this page (you may need to scroll down). Anyone can use this and I hope that you find it interesting.

There's a big difference between passively marketing your wares and aggressively hunting out opportunities.

Look at how Micro Focus (now OpenText) goes after mainframe accounts, look at how AWS goes after mainframe accounts (and IBM leaders open the door for them), look at how Microsoft goes after mainframe accounts.

While winning requires a stout defense and offering tools to your customer base, it also requires that you aggressively go after the competition where they are weakest.  Demos and ROI calculators do not replace smart people making a case.
