    in general you can buy support for outdated hardware just fine, with increasing cost the older the iron, that is. not only from ibm but from 3rd parties as well.

    They'll "support" you forever. However, usually the hardware is good for 5 years after sales is withdrawn. After that, you won't be able to get parts anymore or you'll be charged extra. They'll still help you but you're not going to get firmware updates etc.

    We're getting rid of P5 now. New P7s are more economical and can run more workload in the same power/space footprint.

    I'd recommend getting rid of P4 or older by year-end and P5 by next year. You'd hate to have a system failure and no way to get the part you need.
