I have a sybase database (fs and raw lvms) on a non rootvg volume group. What I would like to do is varyoff databasevg and exportvg datasevg. Then do the complete overwrite install to 5.3 and patch it to TL5 and SP4, put back the users etc. Then I would like to importvg -y databasevg pvname and have the database come up. Will this idea work? Of course I will have mksysbs and backups, but would like to avoid the DBAs having to rebuild the database.

to see if Sybase keeps any files in, say, /etc. And if they do, you should
put them somewhere before you trash the box; otherwise, you'll have to grab it
from the mksysb/backup. I haven't touched Sybase for years so I don't really
remember if they do or not.

Another point to remember is to make sure you pick the old 5.1 hdisks to load
5.3 to so that you actually still have the appvg to importvg from.

Since you mentioned about putting the users back, you might also want to keep
a copy of /etc/security handy since you might need to go back to check out the
ulimits, etc. You can always get it from the mksysb but it might be easier.

Other than that, it should just work fine. And of course, you should have those
    mksysbs/backups, preferrably tested.
