I have around 6 years experience in mainframe and currently looking to change my skill. I have already enrolled for a data science course .I would like to know what steps I need to take before I apply for data science related jobs?

    Hello -

I completed the IBM Data Science Professional Certification on Coursera about 2 months ago and am trying to find my first data science job. I'm curious to learn are there other projects I can and should be working on while I continue my job search or should I be looking for a Data Analyst role just to get started in my career? Does IBM hold any training programs or newbies that will then lead to a position within the company? Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

    Kind regards.

    Hello

As part of a student of Artificial Intelligence Engineer B. S. and a IBM zSystems student ambassador, I would like to know, if there are job opportunities as an intern in the field of AI and Data Science at IBM?

    Good morning Tim,

Please can an experience on the job alone qualify one to be a Data Scientist? After knowing about Data, Data Mining, AI, etc on the job with extensive experience over 15+ , can you be confident to call yourself a Data Scientist, if you have not written any qualifying exams?

Look forward to having a favourable response from you. Thank you.

Hi Tim. I really like your question. By asking it, you show a lot of humility, which speaks highly of you.

I can only speak from my experience, so take this response for just that. Most people who are "Data Scientists" just decided one day to call themselves that. I've been building predictive models and deploying those algorithms in production systems for twenty-five years, but I only recently started identifying as a data scientist. The term or title "Data Scientist" is pretty new, and, honestly, if you ask ten IBM Data Scientists to describe what it is, you'll get 15 different answers. I'm not entirely sure what it is, to be honest.

So, to answer your question, if you have 15 years of experience with AI and Data, I'd say you are already a Data Scientist. You are probably more qualified to use the title than a good portion of people who identify as a "Data Scientist" on their LinkedIn profile.
    :-).

    hi all

    Greetings,

Scientists are of various levels and it depends on the experience one gets during their practice. At the same time there are some minimum limits of expertise that a scientist should possess. So if it is there in the data science domain, he/she is a data scientist.

    regards
    mani

Hi, I'm wanting to change careers and get into data science (UK if it matters). I've been a software engineer for approaching 4 years now and also have a physics Ph.D., so I've got the mathematical and programming background to get through learning materials reasonably quickly. I've also now completed two Coursera courses:

    • Johns Hopkins University's "Data Science Specialization"

    • Andrew Ng's "Machine Learning"

These have given me some experience with the R and Octave languages, although I'm aware that I should get some Python and whatever else under my belt (C++ is by far my most familiar language).

I'm hoping for some advice on what my next move should be, e.g. what would be a good online course to tackle next - there are so many courses out there, so many ''top 10 courses" articles... I just don't know what the next one should be.

I also keep wondering whether those courses have already covered (in a foundational/conceptual sense) most of what a data scientist uses, and perhaps I should now be concentrating more on putting those concepts into practice (rather than going through more video lecture courses).

The first step is understanding the different types of data science jobs. There are three main categories: analytics, data engineering, and business intelligence (BI).

What are some of the essential skills for a data scientist?

    1. Data visualization
    2. Statistical analysis
    3. Machine learning
    4. Programming
Here are some examples of careers in data science:

    • Data engineer
    • Data scientist

Be patient; it takes time to develop the necessary skills and experience to succeed in this field. However, anything is possible with hard work, dedication, and perseverance!
