  • 1.  Upcoming changes to support for Mirantis Runtime Engine on april 2023

    Hello IBM,
I read this news at this link https://www.ibm.com/support/
    particularly
"This change impacts the ability of IBM Planning Analytics on-premises customers to download Mirantis Runtime Engine. Mirantis Runtime Engine is required to deploy Planning Analytics Workspace on Windows Server 2016 and 2019."
"Contact Mirantis if you require support for Mirantis Runtime Engine to run Planning Analytics Workspace.  "

    1. I would like to know if the already installed PAW product continues to work after April without any modification?
    2. I would like to know if after April for new installations of PAW I also have to buy the mirantis license too?
    3. I would like to know if after April for PAW updates I have to buy the mirantis license ?

    thanks
    Massimo

    Thanks George,

I still don't have a clear answer, after April to install MRC do I have to buy a license from Mirantis for new PAW installations? can I continue to download docker without buying the license?

    on your link there is:
" C) After April 30th, 2023, customers will not be able to get support, updates or patches from Microsoft or Mirantis for Mirantis Container Runtime unless they purchase a license from Mirantis."

the old installs still work so the post you pointed says, but if i need a docker update, because some OS or PAW security update requires a new docker version what happens? Do I have to buy a mirantis license? yes, given the point C.

I expect a clear answer from IBM if I need to buy additional software in addition to its products

    Hi Massimo,
There is a fresh info notes regarding Mirantis published on IBM Support site just a few hours ago:

    Hi Svetlana

Thanks for all this clarity. This will represent a big issue for all of our current customers, all of who are Windows shops, and do not have skills to support Linux. IBM did announce the situation around docker a while , but was not made clear is that this is a very expensive product, or whether we would have to purchase it as a new product (rather than merely no longer being supported by Microsoft). Please refer to the following link:  https://store.mirantis.com/product/basic-8x5-for-mirantis-container-runtime-formerly-docker-engine-enterprise-for-windows-server/

From the prices shown, it is a minimum of 3 nodes that must be purchased, i.e servers/environments, at $900 per node per year (=$2700).

This would well make the TCO for current/future PA customers unaffordable if they don't have internal Linux skills. Is there any way in which IBM can negotiate a concession with Mirantis for PA customers. Being able to purchase a single nodes (all that is required for a single environment) would make a big difference.

    Many thanks

    Chris

    Hello Chris,

I have good news for you: BI2run is now an official partner of Mirantis and you can purchase Mirantis Container Runtime Enterprise licences without a minimum order quantity, i.e. even a single node, easily on https://bi2run.de/en/mirantis-licenses.The Enterprise licences of MCR are recommended for production. However, Bi2run is also able to create individual licence offers tailored to your needs. Just give them a call!

    Best,
    Leon

Also Chris, note that paid MCR is only required if you want support or for your production server, not for Dev/Test servers. So if it is a simple 3 tier site, then you really only need to pay for a single MCR licence. It is still not great that the client needs to fork out an additional $US900, but that what it is.

However, it should be noted that MCR can only continue to be used for free if it was installed before April 30th. Anyone who wants to use MCR after May 1st, especially in connection with a new PAW installation, must purchase an MCR licence. From 01.05. you also need the MCR licenses to get support, updates and security patches.

Mirantis provides the following statement: "Effective May 1st, 2023, users of many Microsoft-published Windows Server VM images will no longer receive built-in licensing and support for Mirantis Container Runtime. This means customers will no longer have access to updated images and security patches for CVEs. Users must procure licensing and support
