  • 1.  Planning Analytics cube as a data source in Cognos Analytics

    Posted Thu April 11, 2024 05:42 AM

    Hi,

This question is for IBM, but I posted it here if someone else might be interested about this topic.

    Scenario:

The client has five Planning licenses and five users. Those five users create forecasts etc.

Besides Planning they have ten Cognos Analytics user licenses (five of them are same as Planning users).

They would like to create a new Planning cube e.g. "Sales" only for reporting purposes and publish it in Cognos Analytics portal as a new data source. The data source in Planning for that "Sales" cube are database tables and they don't manually feed data to that cube (no live data).

Are current licenses enough for all ten users if they run reports and dashboards which data source is Planning "Sales" cube from Cognos Analytics portal? Or are there some requirements about licensing?

    BR

    Hi Jaakko,

I can only give you some hints about licensing and what kind of confirmations I have here from IBM.

The wrap up is that the licensing program is the UI you are use to access the data. That means if you have your 10 CA licenses, they are allowed to also use reports and dashboards which are created on top of TM1/PA data. They are not allowed to use Planning Analytics to access the data and maybe enter values. Any user accessing PA directly using the PA UI requires an entitlement. If they are using the Cognos Analytics UI and accessing the PA datasource, that's fine.

Similar applies vice versa. Users with a PA license are allowed to use Cognos Analytics, but only Cognos Viewer and dashboards which use PA datasources.

    Hi Jaako,

I see it like Robert. And I have a hint, if PA is using CAM-Security: You can set a Planning-User to read-only, I remember that they are not counting as license then.

    Hi Robert and Jan,

Thank you for your reply about this topic.
Just to be sure the example scenario is on premise environments.

    Hi @Jaakko Forsberg,

yes, that's for on-premise installations. I haven't looked up the documents for the cloud licenses. Follow the link I've posted above and you can search for the part numbers you have licensed. That is very important because license documents do change from version to version. We just had that with Cognos Analytics and email reports. That has changed dramatically from version to version.

Therefore I recommend do get in touch with your (IBM) sales person for licenses, get the part numbers, look up the current software version and search for them in the IBM license document database online. Some free support programs that might come with your licenses are limited to a certain amount of hardware capacity. That's all written in the documents but not always easily pointed out.

Stay tuned as we are on the way to get more information from IBM re that matter. @Jens Bäumler thanks for getting in touch.

    Hi all.

We are currently having the same discussions.

    The current status would be:
(Depending on the licence) Planning Analytics Users are allowed to:
    - use and create Dashboards
    - use the AI Assistant
    - use Data Modules (but only on TM1 Data?)
    - use and run (burst) Reports (are not allowed to create new reports)
    - use Jobs and Schedules
    ...
    This is not complete.
Let's create a complete overview here (with the help of IBM) of what which users are allowed to do.

    Hi IBM,

I have received a couple of comments about this issue but haven't received any comment from IBM side. Is it possible to have IBM's comment on this topic?

    Here is my question:

    Scenario:

    Environment: On premise
