  • 1.  Framework Manager 11.2.0 still requires Internet Explorer

    Posted Wed September 08, 2021 03:39 PM
The login page for FM 11.2.0 is blank. When I use the X to close the window (the only available control), I see a familiar Internet Explorer popup.
    about:security_BMT11.exe
Content within this application coming from the website listed below is being blocked by Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration.

I thought that IE was no longer required in 11.2.  It isn't supported in the customer environment.  How can I log in to work on FM projects?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    Hi Dave,

There is a controlpanel in windows called Internet Options, were you can make the changes.

    Hi Dave,

I've found the following about about FM using IE (with Cognos Analytics v11.1.x):
Server Busy warning message and logon prompt displayed when trying to use IBM Cognos Framework Manager

Start Internet Explorer® on the computer where Framework Manager is installed
    Click Tools > Internet Options
Click Security tab > Trusted sites > click the Sites button
If checked, clear the "Require server verification" checkbox
Enter the Cognos Analytics server name, for example: caservername.domain.com
    Click add > click close
Click the Custom Level button > scroll down to the end of the settings list
Make sure the "Automatic logon with current username and password" at logon checkbox is checked. If access to change this option is unavailable, you need to ask your system administrator to make the change.
Click OK twice and exit Internet Explorer® and start Framework Manager.

    Hi Patrick,

Thank You for your suggestion.  I've used the "Automatic logon with current username and password" option to achieve single-signon in the past when Cognos BI was hosted on an IIS web server, and Windows Integrated Security (if I'm recalling correctly) was used to secure the cgi-bin folder (or the gateway files in it). I don't think that's going to help in this case, as we're not hosting Cognos Analytics on IIS.

    Kind Regards,

Dave is correct that this is a Cognos problem that needs to be fixed. If we only work with Chrome and Firefox, why is Cognos still using IE?

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Vic.

If you compare these two pages:

    https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/cognos-analytics/11.1.0?topic=manager-system-requirements-cognos-framework
    https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/cognos-analytics/11.2.0?topic=manager-system-requirements-cognos-framework

You'll see that 11.1 included IE as a requirement, but 11.2 does not.

I think they forgot to remove the Trident/MSHTML (the guts of IE) dependencies on the login page from FM when they rolled out 11.2.
As I understand it, there are still a lot of Windows system components that still use Trident/MSHTML, and that's why Internet Options hasn't been removed.

I hope IBM fixes this in the near future, as my customer's IT security folks are not going to start relaxing their Group Policies for legacy software.

    Kind Regards,

Just writing it here, in case anyone else is looking for the info.

You can, from FM 12, configure it to use WebView2 (Edge) instead of built in MSHTML, which is the rendering engine that perform for Microsoft ActiveX control, and is part of the operating system

The steps for changing the setting to use WebView2 is stated here: https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/cognos-analytics/12.0.0?topic=ic-alternate-web-technology-support-framework-manager-authentication-microsoft-edge-webview2

Also, if WebView isn't already installed, install it before you install FM, or webiview might have issues reading/writing fromt he FM installation folder

    Hi,

Cognos Analytics Transformer 12.0.3 (and later) also supports using Microsoft Edge WebView2 for authentication through a feature flag:

    https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/cognos-analytics/12.0.0?topic=transformer-configuring-authentication-using-webview2

One additional piece of information. The webview2 is only used for authentication, other aspects of FM still use the original IE methods. This means you will need to set the IE Enhanced Security on servers the same way for Windows servers as you do for the non-webview2.

See this conversation on this topic, this also apply to v11.2.4 FP3:

    https://community.ibm.com/community/user/businessanalytics/discussion/framework-manager-v1202-using-microsoft-edge-webview2-for-authentication
