Cognos Schedules are not Running

  • 1.  Cognos Schedules are not Running

    Posted Wed September 18, 2024 11:02 AM

    Hi Everyone,

Since last 15 hours the scheduled reports are not running in our Cognos production environment.

when we run reports manually, they are running but when we schedule the report, schedule is not starting.

could you please provide your suggestions here what might be the issue ?

And will rebooting the dispatchers resolve this issue ?

    Thanks,
    Lokesh

Maybe the credentials of the user that is used to run the scheule is not longer valid. In this case you do not see anything in past run and also nothing in audit-db (only in some log file). Log on as this uses (and maybe click a renew credentials) should solve this problem.

    Hi Michael,

    Thank you for your response.

There is no issue with user credentials. Actually, all schedules which are there in our production environment were not started running.

We have stopped Cognos services in dispatchers and content manager and ran NC Drop script in Cognos Notify DB. Then started Cognos services so the problem got resolved.

    Thank You ,

    Lokeswara

    Hello,

can you please check if the user who is owning the schedule has changed the password. If yes, login as the user who is running the schedule and open the user's personal profile and recreate the credentials. I hope it helps.

If the scheduled report was working fine earlier and has suddenly stopped, there may be a few potential issues to consider. One common reason could be that the user changed their network password but did not renew their credentials, which would prevent the scheduled report from running.

To troubleshoot this issue, you can:

    1. Renew your credentials to ensure they are up to date.
    2. Restart the servers to refresh the system.
    3. Consult your administrator, who can check the admin console for any specific errors or configurations that might be affecting the report.

Taking these steps should help you identify and resolve the issue.

This happens to me every year.  I disable and re-enable the scheduler.  That seems to fix things (pre 11.2.4 version).  I would hope this doesn't happen with the newer version.   Also, the credential check is a good suggestion.  We had someone retire and had to reassign all scheduled reports under her access.

    Good Luck

What version of Cognos are you on?  Did you recently upgrade?

We encountered this kind of issue when we were trying to move from 11.1.5 to 11.1.6 and then even to 11.1.7.  IBM changed something starting with 11.1.6 such that in our environment about 8-12 hrs after starting the server up, ALL schedules would simply stop running.  The upcoming schedules would show just fine, but as the time passed, the schedules just didn't run.  A full restart of Cognos would "wake" the schedules up again though nothing that was missed would re-run and the Past Runs was just empty from the last schedule that actually ran to the present time.

We had a support ticket open for nearly 2 years (YES! We were stuck on 11.1.5 for 2 years!) until IBM finally released a fix.  As best they could tell, there'd be an error that would just hang the scheduler so they put a watcher process in the code to "restart" it. Seemed to do the trick though often you could see a schedule started running several minutes past its actual scheduled time.

While we're still running on this fixed version of 11.1.7 we've been testing 11.2.4 FP4 and have not seen this issue with the schedules.

Three weeks ago, we encountered an issue after I changed my password-the scheduler stopped running reports.

The following day, when I noticed the problem, I manually ran the critical reports using the "Run Once" option. Shortly after, the scheduled reports began processing normally again.
We'd like to prevent this from happening in the future.

Does anyone know if it's possible to assign a generic user as the Scheduler User? If so, how can that be set up?

    Thank you,
    Irely

    Hello Irely,

After changing your network password, you must manually renew your credentials in Cognos Analytics to ensure scheduled reports and jobs continue to run.

    1. Log in to your Cognos Analytics environment using your new password.
    2. Click the Personal menu icon, which looks like a person, in the upper-right corner of the screen.
    3. Select Profile and settings or My preferences from the menu.
    4. Navigate to the Personal or Profile tab.
    5. Expand the Advanced options or Advanced section.
    6. Click the Renew option next to "Credentials".
    7. A message will briefly appear to confirm that your credentials have been renewed.

You would probably be best looking to use a service account for this where the password will not expire.
It will though depend upon your licencing model as to how best to do it. If you are using a named user licence model, I'm not sure that having a dedicated service account is permitted under those terms (IBM Cognos police may not like it, so i would confirm it with them first) as its not a real person. If you are PVU style licencing, I think its more likely to be an acceptable approach.
I've assumed you are not Cognos cloud, if you are cloud, then someone else may be able to offer a better solution.
