Many products in the market do not allow two or more active statements/result sets on a database connection.
If the execution of a report requires two or more statements to run at the same time, then separate connections will be used.
For those vendors whose architecture allows two or more on the same database connection, we do not have to use separate connections.
Unclear from your description as to how many connections your server/database will allow.
Separate from how many active statements your report is creating as it runs.
If you haven't already, suggest you open a support ticket and they can help trace the connections and statements being established and closed as the report runs etc.

Subject: Cognos is creating multiple connection to Redshift database for running single report.
Cognos Analytics 11.1.4 is creating multiple connection to Redshift database for running single report and failing with connection limit exceeded error. As per IBM technote, we tried changing installation file. but it still creating connection. Do we have any option to close connection or limit connection like in session commands.
