The most interesting small talk you'll ever have

By Yool Park posted Mon July 11, 2022 06:35 PM

Last week or so, we posted this video in the library.

This is a video clip of the first 5-10 minutes of our weekly sales meeting, hosted by Robbie Berglund, our US Sales Leader. So yes, it is indeed a recording of small talk.

So why are we sharing this?
Fear not, this is not your typical small talk. This video clip contains one of the most special experiences you would have (and one of my favorites) when working with the IBM Weather sales and technical sales team.

Small talk.
It's a light-hearted polite conversation we have in order to warm up to strangers about unimportant, uncontroversial topics - often about the weather. In many cases, our description of the weather stays within a set of several frequently circulated descriptors - it's sunny, rainy, stormy, you name it.

When you have that small talk with meteorologists, though, I assure you it's likely going to be one of the most mind-opening and intriguing small talks ever.

I first experienced this special talk, when I first joined IBM in early 2020, as we were freshly entering the era of COVID-19. It was one of those days filled with WebEx meetings, all of us trying our best to adjust to the new normal. In one meeting, as several of us were waiting for other attendees to join, a usual, friendly chat started off, leading into the topic of weather. Nothing too surprising.

5 minutes into the call, I was mesmerized. I felt gratitude and admiration for nature - which, as you know, doesn't often happen at work.
The weather talk wasn't just about how many inches of snow you got in the backyard overnight. It was the kind of discussion that involved the weather patterns in the region, what type of snow, how this snow was formed, and why your backyard has less today than 30 years ago. I glanced over outside the window, and I felt as though I understood to appreciate what it means to be here, at this time and day, experiencing this unique weather soirée hosted by the nature.

I love the small talks with my Weather colleagues. If a typical weather talk were a black and white picture, this is a talk layered with strokes of colors. That's why we've brought you this video clip, and why we will be bringing more to you. We want to share with you the experience of coloring your day with the knowledge of environmental science, physics, and the whimsical sense of humor that weather brings at random.

This is, of course, a recording of a big meeting. If you want to experience this in real life, please reach out to our sales team to ask about our weather products. ;)
