4 Myths About Transitioning Your Workload to the Cloud, Debunked

By Walt Noffsinger posted Tue September 11, 2018 01:00 PM

Most IT Ops practitioners like you are under constant pressure to transition your workloads to the cloud with minimal costs and no vendor lock-in. You need problems solved, not individual products. And you’re trying to calculate the right ratio of on-prem to cloud apps for today and in the future. No pressure, right?

With all these considerations to sort through, it’s no surprise there are a lot of myths floating around out there about transitioning your workload to the cloud.

Myth 1. If you’re moving off WebSphere you don’t need Cloud App Platform with Hybrid Deployment
Fact:  The bundle will help you. You can leverage your existing WAS investment to buy the Flex bundle and get IBM Cloud Private help you modernize these WebSphere applications and give your team the ability to leverage the best language and framework for your application.

Myth 2: If you want to retain your flexibility with WebSphere deployments, you must buy IBM Cloud Private.
Fact: You can buy Cloud App Platform with Hybrid Deployment bundle and use it for flexibility across WebSphere editions!

Myth 3: Because App Platform V1.2 restricts usage of the IBM Cloud Private bundled programs to support of WebSphere Application Server, and to no more than 30% of the total FlexPoints, you may not have enough IBM Cloud Private entitlements.
Fact: Most clients aren’t moving 100% of their WebSphere applications to the cloud, even with the usage limitations App Platform delivers tremendous value. And, should you need additional IBM Cloud Private entitlements you can always purchase a separate IBM Cloud Private license.

Myth 4: You shouldn’t try to transition your workload to the cloud until you’re fully up to speed on it, because the risk is too great.
Fact:  IBM Cloud Professional Services can help you with a detailed migration assessment offering that helps you estimate your migration, prioritize applications, identify any code or configuration changes, and reduce risk so that you can migrate with confidence.

The IBM Cloud App Platform for Hybrid Deployments helps customers leverage their existing WebSphere investments to transition to IBM Cloud Private. To ensure you’re able to purchase only what you need when you need it, we offer our new IBM licensing sales model, FlexPoints. With Flex Points, we give customers the ability to migrate their workloads to IBM Cloud Private at their own rate and pace, on a core to core basis.

This way, you can make capabilities-based buying decisions, rather than point/product buying decisions. And since you can easily change your platform mix as your needs change over time, you minimize your financial risk and the burden of choosing the wrong deployment mix. The included WebSphere Application Server can be used for any of the Bring Your Own Software and License deployments.
