Introducing the industry’s first quantum-safe system with integrated AI features to the IBM Cloud in Frankfurt

By Sadie Revercomb posted Thu October 10, 2024 11:02 AM

Clients can take advantage of the industry’s first quantum-safe system with integrated AI features on the IBM Cloud in Frankfurt with Hyper Protect Services, LinuxONE for Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) and Wazi as a Service.

Why is this important?

Now European enterprises can maintain data sovereignty requirements while also having access to the industry’s first quantum safe system, IBM LinuxONE 4, in the IBM Cloud. This technology will protect clients’ data and keys against potential future quantum attacks like ‘harvest now, decrypt later.’ Specifically, the new CryptoExpress8s cards leveraging quantum safe algorithms can be accessed via Hyper Protect Crypto Services.

The IBM LinuxONE 4 system is based on the IBM Telum processor with the integrated AI feature. As it is an on-chip processing unit, it is memory coherent and directly connected to any other general-purpose core. This increases AI inferencing performance and the protection provided by IBM Secure Execution for Linux (IBM SEL) applies, which is key for Confidential AI use cases.

Upgrading to this system will ensure clients have all the new and differentiated capabilities built for the solution. Hyper Protect Virtual Servers for VPC is based on IBM SEL technology introduced with IBM LinuxONE III. This technology builds a trusted execution environment around the data ensuring that there is no privileged user access to it, including the IBM Cloud administrator.

As clients continue their modernization and hybrid cloud journey, they can develop and test their z/OS applications in the IBM Cloud with Wazi-as-a-Service before porting workloads to production on-premises. LinuxONE Virtual Servers for VPC can be used to develop, build and test Linux applications for s390x by leveraging fast-provisioning compute capacity - also known as virtual machines - in an IBM Cloud operated shared environment over multiple zone regions (MZR) in the IBM Cloud. This reduces the investment needed by ISVs to offer solutions for the Linux on IBM Z and LinuxONE ecosystem and provides a flexible environment to showcase solutions before deciding to deploy them into production in the IBM Cloud or on-premises.  Both of these technologies provide operational and cost efficiencies backed by the security of the IBM LinuxONE 4 infrastructure

The evolution of these services in the IBM Cloud Frankfurt region signifies IBM’s continued investment to accelerate client’s AI, modernization, and hybrid cloud strategies while keeping security at the heart of IBM’s mission. Only available in IBM Cloud, clients can start using these services in Frankfurt today, in addition to the previously available regions in Tokyo, Washington D.C., Dallas, Sao Paulo, Toronto, Madrid, and London.

More about Hyper Protect Services

Integrated into IBM Cloud services, Hyper Protect Crypto Services  offers the capability of bringing your own encryption to the cloud. IBM Cloud Hyper Protect Crypto Services allows you to Keep Your Own Key (KYOK) for data encryption, gain complete authority over your data and leverage the highest level of commercial technical assurance built on IBM LinuxONE secure enclave technology.

In addition to these benefits, clients can leverage Hyper Protect Crypto Services with Unified Key Orchestrator to support business continuity. This solution acts as a highly secured repository for the keys you are distributing for use in other clouds, providing fast recovery in the event of key-loss or a disaster of your chosen cloud region, and allows clients to work efficiently and consistently across cloud environments or multiple projects in a cloud environment.

IBM Hyper Protect Virtual Servers for VPC is designed to protect cloud-native applications with open container initiative (OCI) deployments. It leverages IBM Secure Execution for Linux  (IBM SEL) technology to support complete data privacy and protection when deploying highly sensitive containerized workloads. No one, not even the IBM Cloud administrator, has access to the data or workload.

More about Wazi as a Service

Wazi as a Service provides the only z/OS development and test virtual servers on s390x infrastructure in public cloud.  You can extend your z/OS development and early test infrastructure into the cloud with privacy and security on IBM Cloud Virtual Private Cloud (VPC).  This allows you to leverage modern tooling and services on IBM Cloud that support Z and establish a new and common way of working across platforms.

More about LinuxONE based Virtual Servers for VPC

LinuxONE Virtual Servers for VPC provides virtual servers based on the s390x processor architecture that brings the advantages of the LinuxONE platform together with the advantages of Virtual Private Cloud (VPC), This grants additional and unique options for companies and individuals looking to develop in the public cloud with the backing of an enterprise-grade Linux server. For those who have or are interested in similar deployments on-premises, this option allows development and testing of the application or workload in IBM’s public cloud.
