IBM Z Architecture - A request from an exceptional professional educator

By Paul Newton posted Thu April 13, 2023 08:18 AM

Dr. David Woolbright is a professional educator.  After many years of collaborating with David, I recognized his exceptional skill to learn, then effectively teach students deep computing technical content.

David requested some information that he was simply unfamiliar with the official IBM source of the information.  I felt great about helping David locate the information enabling him to continue his investigation related to IBM Z Architecture advancements.

IBM Z Architecture is 60+ years of advanced Computer Science technology critical to the second-by-second functioning of the world's economy.

David informed me he was planning a blog about z16.  David wants to include references the latest z16 Principle of Operations manual.  David inquired if I happen to have sources for past IBM mainframe Principle of Operations.

My response to David:

  • Sign in with no cost IBM ID
  • Select library, select processor, scroll forward.
  • Principle of Operations and Reference Summary are at the end of list of IBM processor hardware manuals
I added:
I have many of the original manuals ... even the original confidential/licensed manuals for the original S/360 ... the original mainframe technology DNA.  When those new to IBM in deep technology roles would ask me for advise when struggling to understand the current POP, I would tell them, go get the original POP.... it is the base and fundamental knowledge for understanding the highly complex Z Architecture.

I am truly looking forward to David's future blog.  I wished I would have taken a class from David early in my career.  I learn from David whenever he decides to publish.

Thank you Dr. David Woolbright
