Are You or Your Clients Still Running Java 6?

By Nathan Cullen posted Tue March 06, 2018 09:10 AM

Are you still running applications that are reliant on Java 6 and WebSphere Application Server 7, if so, there are some changes in the pipeline that may affect you and your clients. The purpose of this blog is to let you know what the affected products are, and points you to what you can do to avoid any future support issues.

IBM announced on in September of last year an end of marketing (April 20, 2018) and an end of service (December 31, 2018), for a number of products that are part of the IBM Hybrid Cloud Management portfolio. The products called out are those based on Java 6 and WebSphere Application Server 7. You can find the affected products listed together with their natural replacements in the following table:

TBSM update in mid 2018

It is also worth noting that both IBM Java SDK version 6 and WAS 7 will also be reaching their end of life (EoS in April 2018) before December 31, 2018. IBM Java and WAS 7 will address Java 6 related defects until April 2018, and they intend to distribute any Oracle PSIRT critical fixes release by December 2018.

Recommended Actions

If you are an IBM Business Partner, now would be a good time to reach out to any of your clients you know to be running the affected products, so you can discuss the actions they can take to ensure they continue running a supported IBM Hybrid Cloud Management environment.

If you are an IBM client, please look at the set of applications you currently run, or reach out to your IBM representative to confirm the status of your environment and whether any steps are required to make sure your environment continues with the same level of support.

Extended Support options

Extended support contracts can be requested for up to 3 years. It should be noted that due to limitations in the support for dependent components there will be limitations on the scope of support provided if issues with Java are reported. Customers requiring extended support or AVP Bridge upgrade support  beyond Dec 2018 should discuss with their account manager.
