Today, I am excited to talk to you about collaboration and our rich community of mainframers. First let me share a story , currently, a lot of mainframe customers are dealing with this. Imagine, a manager that has an incredible team with more than 30 years of experience, unfortunately most of them will retire in the next 3 years. So, he needs to start recruiting, as he is doing this, he starts thinking, how am I going to retain this new talent and keep them excited. The new talent really wants a job that is interesting to them, they don’t want to feel isolated they want to feel that sense of belonging, they want to contribute and keep leaning. This is a big challenge for the hiring manager, the team and even the company to make them feel welcome to the community.
So, what is community and why does it matter?
Community is a group of people that share a similar interest. Communities are important because they facilitate a sense of connection, the feeling that “your voice is being heard” and this can potentially lead into new innovations.
Mainframe workforce challenge
“Gartner predicts that, by 2020, 75 percent of organizations will experience visible business disruptions due to I&O skills gaps, which is an increase from less than 20 percent in 2016.”
IBM Z is always looking for ways to build their skills pipeline, we have developed powerful initiatives to address the challenge that our community is facing. We are helping to build Z skills, growing the talent pool and most importantly we are helping to build those connections.
