In response to customer requests, IBM Spectrum Protect Version 8.1.1 was updated on May 26, 2017, to include support for the Linux on Power Systems (little endian) operating system. You can get the installation package now on Passport Advantage. After you install and configure the server, you can back up data to disk devices or to cloud object storage, using one of several cloud object storage providers.

The current installation package includes the server and license, but does not include the storage agent, device support, or the Operations Center. However, you can use the Operations Center on a different operating system to monitor a server that is installed on Linux on Power Systems (little endian). For more information about the release and limitations, see the server readme file.

The link to the readme file is working for me. Here is the URL: http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg27049421 The operating system techdocs are in the process of being updated, for example: http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21243309

The FAQ at this page: 'Overview - IBM Spectrum Protect Supported Operating Systems' only shows LE support for Protect 'Client'. I'm looking for Spectrum Protect V8 'Server' support. Also, you referenced the readme file, however when I click on the readme link it is 'broken'

Because this was an update to an existing release, there was no formal announcement letter. The updates were documented in the readme file, the FAQ document, and the cross-platform migration white paper.

Rich, for V8.1.1, the minimum requirement is to use the Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7.3 operating system with the PPC64LE architecture.

Which Linux operating system on Power is supported by Spectrum Protect V8? I assume that it is SUSE, but which version?

Thank you for this much needed support on LoP! How else was this communicated besides this developerworks blog posting? I looked for an Announcement Letter, but did not see one.

Originally, the IBM Spectrum Protect V8.1.1 server did not support the Linux on Power Systems (little endian) operating system. The new installation package, made available in May, does support this operating system. For details, see the server readme file and search on "Power Systems." http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg27049421

Sanjay, I've recently had to research this issue. Here's what i've found out... V8.1.1 contains Power-Linux LE clients, but SP server v8.1.1 doesn't include any Power Linux LE (or BE) support. Since v7 supported BE LOP, but v8 doesn't, v7 is the only option at the moment. 06/07/2017

The IBM Spectrum Protect V8.1.1 server can now be installed on the Linux on Power Systems (little endian) operating system. The IBM Spectrum Protect V8.1 backup-archive client can also be installed on that operating system.

Hello, I need a bit of clarification on your post. Does Protect Server 8.1.1 now supports Linux on Power LE? Or are you saying that 8.1.1 now support Linux on Power LE clients? We are looking to deploy a TSM server on Linux on Power LE platform and we were informed that that platform is not supported. I saw your post here and thought of clarifying it with you. Please let me know. Thanks, Sanjay
