We’re making our z/OS Connect OpenAPI 3 support more broadly available!

What’s new?

Now it’s possible to get going with our OpenAPI 3 support no matter which license you have! Up until now, OpenAPI 3 support has only been available through some of the z/OS Connect licenses.

Our z/OS-native support for OpenAPI 3 will become available to existing z/OS Connect Simultaneous Instance (SI) customers (those running OpenAPI 2 under our SI license 5655CE3) from today (September 1st 2023), as part of our 3.0.72 release. This means z/OS Connect SI customers will have the ability to run OpenAPI 3 server instances natively on z/OS, alongside your existing OpenAPI 2 server instances.

You do not need to purchase a new license or version: the capability will become available as one of our monthly continuous delivery releases, for you to pick up when you are ready to get started with OpenAPI 3.

Reach out to your IBM client team to learn more about provisioning enough instances to meet your OpenAPI 3 requirements.

What do I need to know before I get started?

  • The update provides our OpenAPI 3 z/OS native server only. To deploy our z/OS Connect server into containerized amd64 or s390x environments (including Linux on Z and zCX), see The IBM Z and Cloud Modernization Stack.

  • You will need to install the latest PTF (PH55842: z/OS Connect V3.0.72) to get the OpenAPI 3 functionality. This can be done as part of your ordinary CD process.

  • Your existing OpenAPI 2 servers will continue to work – everything you have in place can continue as normal.

  • There is no product requirement to convert existing OpenAPI 2 APIs to OpenAPI 3, unless you have a business requirement to do so.

  • If you do need to convert OpenAPI 2 APIs to the OpenAPI 3 specification, documented guidance about migrating will be available in our Documentation soon.

  • You cannot run both z/OS Connect OpenAPI 2 and z/OS Connect OpenAPI 3 in the same server. The servers are configured to run either OpenAPI 2 or OpenAPI 3 using the templates supplied with the product.

  • OpenAPI 3 servers can be managed in the same way as your OpenAPI 2 servers. There are some differences when it comes to deployment of APIs and configuration - this is covered in our Documentation.

  • Developers will need to use the Designer tooling/Gradle interfaces in order to create OpenAPI 3 APIs. To learn more about this new interface, see the Documentation and video links below. The Eclipse tooling and API Build Toolkit is only for creating OpenAPI 2 APIs.
