A Big Event like IBM TechXchange Conference provides extraordinary opportunities for understanding our current situation, because it brings together the top Technologists from the world of hardware, software and artificial intelligence. At the 2024 Conference at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in October, we took advantage of the opportunity to host a spirited conversation between three of the top scientists at IBM: Hillery Hunter, CTO of IBM Infrastructure, Ruchir Puri, Chief Scientist of IBM Research, and Anant Jhingran, CTO of IBM Software.

From left, Ruchir Puri, Chief Scientist for IBM Research, Hillery Hunter, CTO of IBM Infrastructure, and Anant Jhingran, CTO of IBM Software.

All three are IBM Fellows, each with a large following, who spend their days looking forward to what’s coming over the horizon to help position IBM for future success.  This was a rare chance to ask them to focus together on issues of importance to Technologists. We presented them with recent headlines on the impact of Generative AI and asked them to articulate their view on the threats and opportunities facing the IBM Technology Community.

The headlines, gleaned from mainstream and technology media, provided a rich set of hot button issues: Will GenAI replace Developers?  Why are AI Agents the hot new trend? What’s the Future for Infrastructure?

The conversation was lively, with disagreements and humor, but always with a fresh perspective on the Technologist’s challenges in the rapidly emerging Age of Generative AI.  There are many memorable quotes and aha moments. This is 45 minutes you’ll be glad you invested.  Enjoy.
