Next week is the 6th annual IBM TechCon 2024 virtual event is coming up this March 19-21st, with live sessions spread across six topic areas. This includes a dedicated track for Observability & AIOps, where I’ll be talking about Generative AI, how its being adopted in the industry, and how we’re using it in IBM Instana Observability to provide Intelligent Remediation capabilities.
Applying AI and Automation to IT Operations is not a new concept - the term AIOps was created to describe the automation of IT operations, and the application of AI in order to achieve that. However our ability to automate the end-to-end observability and incident lifecycle has been limited. In order to automate, we need to able to determine When, What and How. “Traditional” AI, whether implemented as Expert Systems using algorithms and rules, or as Machine Learning models trained on datasets, is very good and detecting patterns or anti-patterns and therefore solving for “When”. Automation technologies such as Ansible or Robotic Process Automation (RPA) bots can solve for “How”, but the unsolved problem has been determining What - the expert knowledge of what action or actions needs to be taken when AI has determined that a condition has occurred.
Intelligent Remediation takes the concepts of “autonomics” and “self-healing” systems have been an enduring goal across the industry, and turn it into reality. It leverages traditional AI and generative AI from IBM watsonx solutions to automatically detect, diagnose and guide automated incident remediation by providing operations teams with expert knowledge and recommended actions to diagnose and remediate the incident, along with the ability to execute those actions using automation tools like Red Hat® Ansible®.
