Here's what's new and happening within our programming languages community

Let's begin with the biggest announcement: IBM Z and Cloud Modernization Stack. On 18th Jan, 2022, IBM announced the IBM Z and Cloud Modernization Stack. The new IBM Z and Cloud Modernization Stack is designed to help you jumpstart or accelerate application modernization by taking a more standardized approach to IT automation on IBM Z in order to innovate faster with greater productivity and a lower cost.  So how did we contribute to the stack? Our team strives to maintain a high level of currency with the releases from the open-source community. And it's no surprise that we made multiple announcements since 4Q 2021. 

IBM Semeru Runtime Certified Edition for z/OS IBM Semeru Runtime Certified Edition for z/OS, Version 11, formerly known as IBM 64-bit SDK for z/OS, Java Technology Edition, delivers a high-performance Java runtime and development kit that supports Java 11 Standard Edition long-term support specification.

IBM Open Enterprise SDK for Node.js Open Enterprise SDK for Node.js 16.0, formerly known as IBM® SDK for Node.js - z/OS® provides a standalone JavaScript runtime and server-side JavaScript solution for building Node.js native and JavaScript modules for the IBM Z® platform. 
Node.js 16 community updates:

  • V8 JavaScript engine updated to version 9.
  • npm is updated to version 8.
  • Timers Promises API is now a stable feature.
  • Node-API is updated to version 8.

IBM Open Enterprise SDK for Python

IBM improvements to Open Enterprise SDK for Python 3.10 include the following and more:

  • Improvements in fork and multiprocessing usability on z/OS. This improves multiprocessing execution when using these functions in Open Enterprise SDK for Python 3.10.
  • Improved support for installing from wheels on z/OS. Fixes implemented to improve encoding and file tagging when you use the Python wheel package to install a package on z/OS.
  • Fixes in scenarios in which Python performed auto-conversion on ttys.

IBM Open Enterprise SDK for Go

IBM Open Enterprise SDK for Go 1.17 is now available! Except for numerous additional improvements and bug fixes, this release also has some key new features.
 
Open-source community features
IBM Open Enterprise SDK for Go 1.17 brings significant features from the open-source community:
  • Lazy module loading supported to avoid processing irrelevant dependencies.
  • New functions for safer pointer arithmetic introduced.
