Bridging the Gap in Cognos Analytics Modeling: Advancing Data Modules in Cognos Analytics 12.1.1

By Agathe Chapelle posted 27 days ago

As organizations modernize their BI environments, Data Modules have become the strategic direction for modeling in Cognos Analytics. With 12.1.1, we are continuing to close the gap between traditional Framework Manager (FM) packages and modern, web-based Data Modules.

Framework Manager remains a strong choice for large and governed enterprise models with deep metadata requirements. However, Data Modules offer key advantages, including browser-based access and continuous innovation making them the preferred modeling experience going forward.

To further bridge the remaining gaps with FM package capabilities, 12.1.1 introduces two important enhancements to Data Modules:

  • Use vs Display Value: Authors can now separate the value used for filtering from the value displayed to the user. For example, dashboards can filter on a secure ID while showing a friendly business name, improving both usability and governance.
  • Relationship Expression Editor: Before this enhancement, relationships between two tables could only be created by matching columns. Now, authors can use an expression to relate the tables allowing for more advanced logic if needed.

These enhancements reduce the need to remain dependent on Framework Manager for critical modeling workflows.

Hi @Agathe Chapelle

I'm trying to find in the UI where is the new feature Use vs Display Value. I understand how it is working in Framework Manager but I don't find similar options in data module.

Best regards,
