  • 1.  REST API results appear different from the Web interface?

    Posted Tue August 01, 2023 11:19 AM

Referring to Lesson 1: Reassigning large quantities of software instances - IBM Documentation, step 9, I appear to be getting a different list of instances that can be re-assigned in comparison with what the Web interface shows when trying to do the same thing. Is this a known problem? Or likely to be user error? Comments welcome :). Thanks.

    Hello Ian,

The only difference between Web interface and REST API is that currently assigned products are not listed when using REST API (targetBundlesOfInstances?productInventoryId=xx).
What I mean by this is that a list of the releases where instances can be reassigned by means of REST API would always be smaller than the one listed by Web interface.

Nevertheless, give us some more details if you see something entirely different (for example, products which are outside of a default bundling option).
Also, which ILMT version you are referring to ?

    Hi Oktawian,

Thanks for your response. What I was trying to do was reclassify confirmed software from the PVU to VPC metric where appropriate. Perhaps, as you've mentioned, the assigned products aren't changing, that then isn't quite so easy using the REST API.

I'm trying to assist a customer who needs to do significant software reclassification. I was experimenting by creating a Python utility that might help. However, I think there are challenges with this approach as the results from various API calls produce a lot of data. It's not completely clear to me if the steps in this link are necessarily the right approach. No matter what, the customer would probably need to check things rather carefully!

I'm trying this on version 9.2.31.

Happy to send you my test output when it's clearly documented if that helps demonstrate what I'm trying to do.

    Hello Ian,

Ok...could you please open up the support ticket to us ?
I'd prefer to to continue this investigation through support channel as some of REST API output/Web interface screenshots needs to be exchanged.

I guess that we've agreed that this dedicated
REST API & Web interface doesn't give the same results...
The remaining question is if your case proves some inconsistences in REST API output or it's just lack of appropriate interpretation of the results.

As already mentioned by me in another thread "limit" and "offset" don't work on some of the REST API outputs to paginate the output.
So, I agree that interpretation of some of those API call results are on the heavy side...
