We've been on BPM Workflows for approximately four years and recently installed BAW.  I'm looking for feedback on any lessons learned or training you took that helped transition to building workflows in BAW or in general using the BAW package more.

    Hi Nicole,

all the skills you earned on BPM workflows are still fully valid in BAW and you should find yourself familiar when upgrading to BAW. Some terms have changed (e.g. Workflow Center instead of Process Center) but the way how you design a Process Application in BAW is similar to what you did in IBM BPM.

However, BAW gives you additional options like AI infused task management ("next best task" for process workers) or building Case Management solutions. In contrast to Process Applications, which traditionally represent a system of engagement, Case Management solutions can also act as system of records as the case artifacts, e.g. documents, comments (on cases, tasks, documents), task information, etc, are persisted in the underlying content repository.

In case you deploy BAW in the container form factor on OpenShift, you gain additional benefits, for example by leveraging Business Automation Insights (BAI) for Business Operations Management.

Regarding training options, I'd recommend to have a look into the BAW Solution Developer Training Path:

    Best regards,

    Michael

My personal view after twelve years of BPM, four years of CM and two years of BAW is that you should be wary of using a case as a system of record (or parent layer) for structured processes. The data model of case is problematic for objects and data sharing between layers-activities-processes;also, if you use an internal process application you will lose tracks/branches. To name two issues. Using FileNet as external ECM and a database as system of record is likely better.

Thus, keep using the BPM parts and stay happy. Be aware that Workplace does not (currently) support displaying process diagrams, so decide if low-code programming or true-full business process management is more important to you.

I like the concept of unstructured case management, but not the IBM implementation of it. For semi-structured processes, process diagrams can contain ad-hoc activities and event subprocesses. Call me biased, but there are some substantial reasons for my opinions.
