  • 1.  Business Process complexity calculator

I am preparing a document with a questionnaire about the processes our customers want to automate using BAW.

One of the questions is to specify the number of processes and their complexity level. But to define the complexity level (high, medium, low) they need some guidelines. For example 10 activities, 4 integration points, 5 rules etc. is considered high complexity.

I would like to know whether there is a standard  guideline or complexity calculator available for this purpose?

There isn't a universally standardized guideline or complexity calculator specifically for Business Automation Workflow (BAW) that defines process complexity levels (high, medium, low). However, organizations often use customized criteria to assess complexity based on their specific needs. Here's a common approach you can use to guide your customers in defining the complexity of their processes:

    Low Complexity:

    • Number of Activities: Less than 5
    • Integration Points: 0-1
    • Business Rules: 1-2
    • Decision Points: Few or none
    • Human Involvement: Minimal, often fully automated
    • Exception Handling: Rare or simple
    • System Interactions: Limited, usually involving one system or data source

    Medium Complexity:

    • Number of Activities: 5-10
    • Integration Points: 2-3
    • Business Rules: 3-5
    • Decision Points: Moderate, with some branches
    • Human Involvement: Required at certain stages
    • Exception Handling: Requires some handling but not frequent
    • System Interactions: Involves multiple systems or data sources

    High Complexity:

    • Number of Activities: More than 10
    • Integration Points: 4 or more
    • Business Rules: More than 5
    • Decision Points: Complex, with many branches and conditions
    • Human Involvement: Extensive, requires multiple approvals or interactions
    • Exception Handling: Frequent and complex scenarios
    • System Interactions: Extensive, involving multiple systems, data sources, or external services

    Customization for Your Organization:

    • You can adjust these guidelines to fit the specific nature of your workflows and the needs of your customers.
    • Some organizations also develop internal calculators that weigh each of these factors to produce a more granular complexity score.

If you're looking to create a complexity calculator, you might consider assigning point values to each criterion and calculating a total score that maps to the complexity level (e.g., 0-10 points = Low, 11-20 points = Medium, 21+ points = High).
