  • 1.  Create a diagram or model of Netcool Impact policies

    Posted Tue August 02, 2022 02:55 PM
I just came across c4model.com, which allows you to visualize software architectures. That reminded me that I've never found anything that (to me) could visualize the Netcool Impact policies that are applied to events.  So my question to the group is: Has anyone found such a beast? I've only managed to create very wordy documents (that sometimes include tables, graphs, etc.) to convey this information. Has anyone come up with a better/standardized/automatic way to present this information?

    Hello @Frank Tate

From my prospective there is one more good option that is "Visual Paradigm"
Its an online Infographic, Diagram & chart maker to visualized the data to increase productivity

If you want to discuss more let me know 😊😊

    Hi Ruchi,

Thank you for your reply. From Googling, it looks like this is the tool you're talking about: https://online.visual-paradigm.com/diagrams/solutions/free-visual-paradigm-online/ . That seems to be really similar to draw.io or MS Visio. All of those can probably accomplish the task, though I'm looking for something that is written specifically to read the combination of Impact policies and services to generate a diagram. Doing it by hand, especially with daily/weekly updates to policies and services, would be too labor-intensive. And I've simply never seen a diagram describing an Impact codebase, so I was hoping to find one before I consider creating such a beast.

You could also consider using Blueworks Live, but it has many of the same update issues. It does generate a diagram compared to the others you mention, so might be a step closer to what you are looking to create. It's designed for process mapping, but it has been used for this and other uses, like keeping track of running RPA bots and mapping dependencies. You would still have to do manual updating though. There is a video of how the diagram generation works here to see if this would help:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vcf4Zef5umc (minute 6 - 10)

Some of the principles in the C4 model are similar to process modeling principles.

Thank you very much for pointing me to Blueworks Live, Stephanie. That definitely has more capabilities than draw.io or Vizio, but is, unfortunately, no closer to to what I'm hoping to find.

The tool I'm looking for would do something similar to this: https://pythontutor.com/visualize.html#mode=edit (I don't know exactly what I'm looking for, but I keep finding tools that do things similar to what I'm searching for). Pick one of the Python examples to see it in action. Here's a screenshot from one of the inheritance examples:

I just found the above tool, and it's pretty amazing to me.

Some of the HUGE hurdles in doing something like this with Impact Policies are:

    1. Policies may be in JavaScript (lots of possible tools available) or IPL (no tools available at all)
    2. The fact that Services are defined and can kick off different policies at different times, and using different filters (I honestly have no idea how this would be visualized in a meaningful way)
    3. Policies often pull data from datasources.
    4. Policies can kick off shell scripts, which can basically do anything.
    etc.

So if Blueworks Live could output Impact services and policies, it would be a good starting point for a new implementation. But since it can't actually spit out the code for policies, it would just be an additional labor-intensive step in the process of developing policies.

I know that the really difficult part for a tool is the ability to injest what has been written/configured and to then generate the appropriate diagrams (possibly from the c4 model) depicting what's been written. Ignoring this admittedly pie-in-the-sky goal, I'm separately hoping to find that someone has already created some examples in some tool specifically aimed at Netcool Impact policies, services and datasources.
