  • 1.  SPSS not working on MacOS Big Sur

    Posted Mon May 13, 2024 08:44 AM

    Hi guys, I am trying to run SPSS on my Mac that is working with MacOS Big Sur. I always get the error message "server login - local computer". I already tried to use the fix package for Sonoma believing that this might also work for my case - but it didn't.

    Do somebody have any idea what to do in order to make SPSS run. After doing a lot of research I am still completely clueless how to fix this issue but really need it getting work to be able to proceed with my thesis.

    Many thanks!

    Hello Bianca,

    I had the same problem in a customer environment.

    You found some hints under SPSS on Macbook air with M2 chip | SPSS Statistics (ibm.com) , my tryings based on that was not successful in all environments. So I installed and ran the whole thing under Parallels and it worked.
    I hope this helps you...

    Hi there,

    I understand how frustrating it can be to encounter issues while trying to run SPSS on your Mac with MacOS Big Sur. Here are a few steps that might help resolve the "server login - local computer" error:

    1. Check Compatibility
    First, ensure that the version of SPSS you are using is compatible with MacOS Big Sur. IBM SPSS often requires updates or patches to work correctly with newer operating systems.

     2. Install the Latest Patches
    If you haven't already, visit the IBM SPSS website and download the latest fix packs or patches specifically designed for MacOS Big Sur. Sometimes, patches for newer versions like Sonoma might not be applicable to Big Sur.

    3. Adjust Security and Privacy Settings
    MacOS security settings can sometimes interfere with software installations. Go to:
    - System Preferences > Security & Privacy
    - Check if SPSS is allowed to run and grant necessary permissions.

    4. Run SPSS as an Administrator
    Try running SPSS with administrative privileges:
    - Right-click on the SPSS application and select "Get Info."
    - Check the box that says "Open using Rosetta" if you have an M1 Mac.
    - Open the terminal and run SPSS using sudo:
      ```
      sudo /Applications/IBM/SPSS/Statistics/26/Statistics.app
      ```

    5. Reinstall SPSS
    As a last resort, uninstall SPSS completely and then reinstall it. Ensure that all previous settings and preferences are removed to avoid conflicts.

    Additional Resources
    For more detailed troubleshooting, you can refer to the IBM SPSS support page or community forums where other users might have shared solutions.

    For professionals, including those in healthcare recruitment, like Aussie Locums having reliable software is crucial. Whether you're managing data analysis for your research or handling locum placements, ensuring your tools are functional can save a lot of time and stress.

    Good luck with your thesis! I hope these steps help you get SPSS up and running.

    Many thanks,

    Hi Bianca,

    Running SPSS on macOS Big Sur can be challenging. Here's how you can troubleshoot the "server login - local computer" error:

    1. Check Compatibility: Confirm that your SPSS version is compatible with Big Sur. If it's not, upgrade to a version that is.

    2. Reinstall SPSS: Completely uninstall SPSS, including residual files in the Library directories. Download and reinstall the latest version from IBM or your institution's software portal.

    3. Apply Patches: Use patches specifically for Big Sur, not for other macOS versions.

    4. License Configuration: Ensure your SPSS license is correctly set up. For network licenses, verify your computer's connection to the license server. For single-user licenses, check that the license file is in the correct directory.

    5. Run as Administrator: Open Terminal and run SPSS with administrative privileges using:

       ```sh
       sudo /Applications/IBM/SPSS/Statistics/version/bin/stats
       ```

       Replace `version` with your SPSS version number.

    6. Java Version: Ensure the appropriate Java version is installed, as SPSS relies on Java.

    7. Firewall Settings: Allow SPSS through the firewall via System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Firewall > Firewall Options.

    If the problem persists, contact IBM Support or check their community forums for similar issues. Additionally, your institution's IT support might offer specific guidance. Good luck with your thesis!
