SPSS crashes immediately upon launching

I downloaded v. 28 of SPSS Statistics on my Macbook. I got it activated with the key my university gave me, and it installed successfully. Now when I launch it, it will load and then show an error message for a second and then crash altogether. No one at my school's IT department can help. If anyone has any experience with this happening, help would be appreciated because I need to use this application for my homework.

In Finder, could you go to ~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports and see if we wrote anything there?

If so, please ZIP it and send it to me at
    marcantr@us.ibm.com

    Thanks.

Okay, great. I have sent you an email with the attached zip file. Let me know if there's anything else I can provide that would help.

    Thank you.

    We have it. Thanks.

One of my colleagues said, "One thing I can see that seems a bit odd is that this is supposed to be Statistics 28, yet the copy of spssengine that crashes is in a "/Applications/IBM SPSS Statistics 27/SPSS Statistics.app/Contents/bin/" folder.

"Do they have two copies of Stats, and could the wrong one be getting launched?"

I don't believe I do, but how would I check and see if there was multiple copes?

One way is to use Finder, navigate to the /Applications folder, and look for a folder named IBM SPSS Statistics 27.

    Hi,

I'm having a very similar issue if not the same issue. Would you be able to help me as well, please? I have followed the steps above, so just waiting for your approval to send it your mail.

    Hi @Bladimie Germain

Unfortunately Rick has moved on and is no longer working at IBM. Can I ask for a little more information please:

    1. What version of IBM SPSS Statistics are you using?
    2. Are you running on Windows or MacOS? What version of that operating system do you have?
    3. What happens when you launch the product - any error messages?
    4. When did this problem start happening for you - were any upgrades performed to your OS or other changes made?

Hopefully we can figure out what is happening for you.

    Best regards,

I have the same issue since updating my Mac OS to Sonoma. I'm running IBM SPSS Statistics 29.0.1 using the network license provided by my university and have applied the patch to replace the libplatdep.dylib file in /Applications/IBM\ SPSS\ Statistics/SPSS\ Statistics.app/Contents/lib. The program crashes immediately after starting. I've converted one of the corresponding .ips files written to ~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports to a text file and am enclosing this with this post. Strangely, I can run the program by executing sudo -b /Applications/IBM\ SPSS\ Statistics.app/Contents/MacOS/stats from the command line, although the program won't close cleanly when doing it this way. Much looking for a solution…

    Hi @Robert Csapo

Since this was an issue prior to upgrading to Sonoma, I'd think that it is still an issue on top of upgrading to Sonoma.
I'd strongly suggest a fresh install, followed by applying the Sonoma Interim Fix

    Hi David,

Thanks for getting back to me. I have fully removed and reinstalled SPSS, then applied your temporary fix (actually tried to do so in various ways - both using your fix package and manually copying the .dylib-file to its destination) and then re-run the license wizard (which, for whatever reason, never opens automatically - I always had to manually start it from /Applications/IBM\ SPSS Statistics/Resources/Activation). The program doesn’t launch on click (the icon bounces for a while, mostly followed by an error message, sometimes not even that shows up) but can be launched from the command line. Starting it this way, however, it cannot be shut down properly.

I’m teaching stats to undergraduate students and the one reason I’m still using SPSS for teaching purposes (not for my own research) is that it requires less computer and/or programming skills as compared to R. With such a sloppy version, however, I’m wondering whether it’s finally time to move on.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Best wishes,
    Robert

I had similar problem with SPSS 27 and when I upgraded to SPSS 28, I was able to run the program once and the program is again crashing. I am using Windows 10, is there similar steps I could do?

    Hi

I am having trouble with crashing. I just installed version 29.  I am told the data set is 512 mega bytes.

    I would appreciate any advice.

    Hi all,

I'm experiencing a similar issue under macOS Sonoma. I've re-installed 29.0.1.1 and swapped the lib file from the fix. When starting SPSS I can access the license wizard (using a license server from my university) which gives me no errors (see attached) but then starting SPSS again results in a bouncing app icon before it vanishes without opening. Trying to open it via Terminal (Contents/MacOS/stats) results in an 'abort error' in Terminal (see attached).

How can this be fixed, is there anything else I can provide that would help?

    Best
