  • 1.  Get SPSS Splash screen but not opening

    Hi all,

    One of our clients uses SPSS, and since yesterday when he opens it he gets the splash screen but SPSS itself doesn't open (I also don't see a process of it in task manager).
    I re-installed SPSS, ran all available updates on his computer and updated Visual C++ Redistributable.

    But nothing i've tried seems to fix the issue, Anyone any idea what else I can try?

    Hi @Max van Eden 

    You don't say whether your client is using the "On-Prem" version of SPSS Statistics with Term license, or if they are using SPSS Statistics Subscription which is licensed to the IBMid.  It also could make a difference whether this is Windows or macOS.

    Hi @Max van Eden ,

    In addition to the good advice from David Dwyer, if none of those solve the issue then you can try this (assuming you're on MS-Windows):
    - From a command window, change directories to the main Statistics installation directory
    - Type: stats.com and press the <Enter> key

    That will run Statistics from a command window and if there are exceptions being thrown at startup, then they will appear in the command window after quitting Statistics (or force-quitting if necessary). Post those exceptions here and that may help us to diagnose the problem.

    Hi Curtis,

    Thanks for your response, and sorry for not getting back on this earlier.

    I already figured out what caused it, it turns out it was our security (SentinelOne) that was blocking SPSS.

    I've whitelisted the executable for SPSS and then it worked again.

    I had a similar case to the one described by Max van Eden and the known Issues mentioned by you (David Dwyer) we're not fitting for this problem.

    The problem occured on a Windows 11 HP Laptop with the latest Windwos updates installed.

    I ran stats.com in the command window and it showed the following assertion error:

    Invalid UTF8 character at 000001A6572C1D60, 1331210:06:46.120 0x1aa00    j9mm.141    *    ASSERTION FAILED  at C:\workspace\openjdk-build\workspace\build\src\openj9\runtime\gc_base\StringTable.cpp:663: ((false))
    JVMDUMP039I Speicherauszugsereignis "traceassert", Detail "" um 2024/01/17 11:06:46 - bitte warten.

    I would appreciate any hints on how to solve this Invalid UTF8 character at .... error.

    Hello @Benjamin Frühling. This is an odd error. First of all the crash dump files cannot be written to the `C:\PROGRA~1\IBM\SPSSST~1\` directory, which makes it difficult to determine what is happening.

    Some questions:

    1. Which version of SPSS 29 do you have installed? If it is not the latest (version 29.0.2.0), then I recommend you try that.
    2. Do you have another JRE in your system path? I want to be certain that Statistics is using the JRE that ships with the product. 
    3. What is the full path to your installation of Statistics, including drive letter?
    4. May I assume that your operating system is set to German Windows?
